On Thursday night at GDC, a room full of mobile gaming executives, developers, journalists, and their friends and family gathered in the ballroom at the San Francisco Fairmont hotel to hear the winners of the 9th IMGAs– and to watch a surreal performance by Swedish alt-musicians Sirqus Alfons. The big winner for the night was Walking Dead: The Game, which won for both Excellence in Storytelling and the overall Grand Prix.
Other winners for the night included The Room for Excellence in Visuals, Fairway Solitaire for Excellence in Gameplay, Spaceteam for Excellence in Innovation, and Candy Crush Saga for Best Social Game. One of the new categories this year was Best Serious Game, which considered educational games along with games that promote a social issue. The winner for Best Serious Game was DragonBox+, a game that teaches algebra by having you combine positive and negative icons to simplify equations.
The People’s Choice award, selected by the public, was given to The Room. The 12-member jury also reached a tie in the Honorable Mention category, so additional awards were also given to both Devil’s Attorney and Zombies, Run!.
The ceremony was hosted by Geekbomb.net’s Maude Garrett, who kept the crowd engaged with her playful onstage banter. Before and after the Grand Prix winner was announced, the audience also entertained by an outlandish performance by Sirqus Alfons, who combined dancing and electronic music with videogame-themed skits.
