What’s New? Wednesday 3/18/09

What’s New? is STP’s new feature that’s designed to quickly point out what’s new and notable on the App Store every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (or as often as we can get to it, anyway)! This is a great way to keep tabs on a lot of games we’ve downloaded recently and are playing ourselves.

We know, we know… we just said this was coming out on Thursday for $9.99, but Konami punked us and put it out today for two dollars cheaper. We’ll get over it, because it’s one hell of a shooting gallery game. Metal Gear fans are a notoriously fickle lot, so we can see opinion breaking both ways on this game, but we like it so far. Full review will be up later today.

Rumors of Texas Hold ‘Em poker’s demise have been greatly exaggerated: this one-time fad has turned into a thriving multi-billion-dollar industry, and its popularity shows no signs of abating in the App Store, either. Poker Superstars III is based on the third season of the Fox Sports Net TV show and features some bigtime players, such as 2005 WSoP Ladies’ Champion Jennifer Tilly–no multiplayer, though. It’s 99 cents for a limited time, normally $4.99.

This funky little two-stick shooter (99 cents) has a ton of powerups, mildly psychedelic paint splatter visuals, global high scores, and an adaptive techno soundtrack that cranks up as you go along. It’s not bad.

Batter Up Baseball ($2.99) is Skyworks’ latest arcade sports entry, coming after the well-received Arcade Bowling and a couple of football games. It’s a basic homerun derby contest, where swiping the screen at exactly the right time hits you an out of the park dinger. Tilting the iPhone puts some english on the ball, enabling you to hit bonus billboards out along the fences. Skyworks sticks to what it knows best, and there’s something to be said for that, in our opinion.
