Under The Radar: September 29, 2011

One of our goals here at Slide To Play is to put you in touch with the best iOS games every week. We cover the big-name games on Wednesday, and indie gems on Thursday, with regular reviews throughout the week. Here’s five of the best new iOS games you probably haven’t heard of yet.

Big Pig

In this amusing physics puzzle game, you have to construct a platform that will support the whole hog. Using a random assortment of planks, wheels, crates, and buckets, you have to create a structure above a certain height, then test it by plopping a big pig right on top. There’s a tense five seconds at the end when you’re not sure if your structure will topple or hold, and with 48 levels, Big Pig offers a lot of challenge for prospective architects, engineers, and pig farmers.

Ski On Neon

Have you already mastered the carefully-timed flight patterns of Tiny Wings? Ski On Neon offers similar gameplay– just press on the screen to dive into the smoothly-rounded hills– but with a wintery, 80s twist. This game contains a variety of tough events like “high flyer” jumps, speed trials, and technical slopes that will put your timing skills to the test.

Robotriot

In the future, when spaceship captains can’t pay their bills, their ships get repossessed by SLUG, a hovering bot with a laser cannon. You have to guide SLUG through the inner workings of the repoed ships, destroying their defenses so they can be towed away. This side-scrolling platformer has a distinctive retro style, calling to mind classic MS-DOS computer games like Commander Keen.

Aurum Blade

Aurum Blade is a new action RPG that’s a bit more Diablo than Zenonia. You play as one of three characters who are tasked with taking down an evil duke who is turning the villagers into monsters. Early on, you’ll enter your first dungeon, where gold and other loot is tucked away in convenient crates and chests. You’ll eventually unlock the secrets of the Blade Towers, where you can summon monsters to fight on your side. Aurum Blade is a free download, with in-app purchases if you want to buy premium items in the virtual store.

FlipShip

Though it’s extremely similar to Tilt To Live, FlipShip has a few unique features that make it stand out. You can maneuver your ship around the screen by tilting, but if you get close to an enemy of the same color, you’ll automatically blast them and earn more points. Tapping on the screen will cause your ship to change color, allowing you to destroy different enemies. The combination of Tilt To Live and Ikaruga is a clever one, so check out this shooter if you’re skilled with an accelerometer.
