Under The Radar: October 14, 2011

Once a week, we pay tribute to the thousands of independent App Store developers by picking our favorite new indie games. This week, we herded sheep, raced upside down, and saved the streets from cheerleader zombies. Read on for this week’s picks.

Corona Indie Bundle

This app actually contains five games, including indie gems The Secret of Grisly Manor and Robot 99. Stylistically, they couldn’t be more different: The Secret of Grisly Manor is an atmospheric adventure game with an interesting story, and Robot 99 is a fast-paced high-score game with parachuting robots. You’ll also get three more decent indie games: the puzzle games Walkabout and Chickens Quest, and the tap-happy balloon game Float. Purchased separately, all these games would cost $5, so this $.99 bundle is a great deal.

Get the Flock Out

When mutton-hungry Vikings invade, it’s up to you and your obedient sheepdog to rescue the flock. You control your sheepdog by drawing a path and guiding sheep to the pen, where they’ll be whisked away to a distant castle. Sheep can be distracted by fields of clover, or sink in quicksand, so you’ll have to pay attention to your flock and keep them focused. We especially like this game’s adorable character design and cutscenes.

Jaggy Race

‘Jaggies’ are usually an artifact of low-resolution polygons, but the graphics in this 2D racing game are quite nice. Pressing the corner of the screen will propel you forward or backwards, and you can jump off the track to avoid spinning sawblades and laser fences. In Jaggy Race, the tracks quickly become insane–you’ll drive straight up, upside down, or loop around as you race for the fastest time.

Rocket Claw

In this addictive high-score game, you play as a drone named C.L.A.W.D. who has to rescue lost astronauts while destroying meteors and other space junk. Tapping on the screen will extend your claw, which you can also use to mine for crystals. Crystals will unlock new game modes, powerups, and an extra character, all of which make RocketClaw even harder to stop playing.

ZombiePanic

Like the walking dead during an apocalyptic outbreak, zombie games are everywhere on the App Store. In the shooting gallery game Zombie Panic, you play as a pistol-packing hotshot who wants to put a smiley face on every door by clearing the dead inside. You only have a second to decide whether to pull the trigger on a zombie, or hold your fire for uninfected civilians. Not only are there dozens of levels with multiple difficulties, but you can unlock new guns by completing special objectives.
