What do rebels, dinosaurs, and a pirate parrot have in common? Not much, except that they’re the stars of today’s Under The Radar indie iOS games. These five games stand out due to their creative concepts and artwork, so give them a download to support your App Store indies!
You’ve played side-scrolling beat ’em ups where you fight zombies and pirates, but what about Herzegovinian outlaws? In Rebel Hero, you play as a hajduk, a Balkan outlaw who is rebelling against the Ottoman Empire. You have buttons to swipe your sword, fire a pistol, and toss bombs. Collecting coins and gems will let you purchase better weapons between rounds. The gameplay is familiar, but extra cultural touches like the traditional “ganga” singers on the soundtrack make Rebel Hero feel one-of-a-kind.
FDG Entertainment is responsible for one of our all-time favorite puzzle games on iOS, Cover Orange. With its similar, happy-go-lucky art style, Expand It! could become our new favorite. You have to help these simply-shaped dinosaurs reach the rainbow by puffing them up with a tap. However, the order in which you blow them up is the difference between tasting the rainbow and popping on the end of a sharp stick.
Rather than hanging out on Long John Silver’s shoulder, this parrot is freelancing for treasure. You’re given a map with the location of treasure chests scattered around the ocean. You have to drop a limited number of barrels in order to fly between all the map’s hotspots. If you keep a spare barrel in reserve, you’ll get an extra gem on each level. Finding the most efficient way to place your barrels is tricky, but it’s worth it when you’re up to your beak in loot.
In this physics-based puzzle game, you play as a T-rex who is trying to herd smaller dinosaurs into caves using an egg-launching bazooka. You just aim at the dinos, then pull back on the lever on the right to fire your shot. Eggs will cause the dinos to scuttle ahead, and if you bank your shots, you can secure multiple dinos at once for a better score.
It seems like every other new indie game we play is a high-score runner like Jetpack Joyride or Tiny Wings. Light The Night is similar, but it has a really nice graphical style, soundtrack, and gameplay mechanic. You simply slide up or down to guide your lightning bug as he picks up light, while avoiding flowers and other bugs. You’ll be able to purchase additional abilities for your bug, or unlock them through regular play. Light the Night is a free download today for a limited time, so click the link below to get started.
