Under the Radar: March 29, 2012

Looking for something a bit different? Every week, we pick five promising-looking indie iOS games to feature in our Under The Radar column. This week, we’re climbing through space, rolling hedgehogs, and taming monsters. And for just five bucks, you can own all the games listed below.

Spin Up

Spin Up is a brilliant iPad game where you play as an astronaut climbing through a rapidly-deteriorating space elevator. You have to rotate each floor to bring your astronaut to a ladder, all while destroying computers and vicious aliens for experience points. Earn enough points, and you’ll begin to unlock new characters who start the game further along and can wield more weapons. We loved the graphics, music, gameplay, and humor in Spin Up– this game comes very highly recommended.

BrainJewel

In this iPad collection of Egyptian-themed brain training puzzles, you have to earn enough stars to make your way to a pile of riches. For example, in one minigame a dust storm will blow away one object from a pile of items, leaving you to remember which one is gone. Getting three stars on each minigame will require you to either have a sharp mind, or spend in-game gems on helpful power-ups.

Monster Tamer

Monster Tamer is an action game where you battle and capture monsters. Captured monsters can be upgraded between levels, evolved into stronger forms, or sold for extra coins. You can also take them into battle to fight with you. The 3D graphics and animation look great, and Monster Tamer’s upgrade system seems to have a lot of depth.

Rollerhog

Instead of an endless running game, Rollerhog is an endless rolling game. As your little hedgehog rolls across the screen, you have to swipe to cut down flowers, lower alligator jaws, slice up pufferfish, and perform other strange actions. If you do well enough, you’ll activate the mind-melting Hyper Mode, which is wonderfully trippy. There’s not a lot to Rollerhog, but it looks great and is definitely kid-friendly.

Pixopush

Developed by a 17-year old, Pixopush is an easy-to-approach sliding puzzle game. On each level, your goal is to connect two houses with a road. You can arrange the board by sliding sections of it diagonally. After each completed road, you’ll get a handful of experience points, which act as your high score. There isn’t a ton of level variety, but we enjoyed Pixopush’s intuitive controls and simple presentation.
