Under the Radar: June 14, 2013

Loads of games hit the App Store every week, and unfortunately we can’t give our full attention to them all. In our Under the Radar feature we highlight worthy games that you might otherwise overlook as you play your blockbusters like Gangstar Vegas and Avengers Aliance. Read on for our picks for this week’s Under The Radar.

    GP Retro

If you grew up on 8-bit racing games like R.C. Pro-Am, then you’ll feel right at home with GP Retro, a top-down racer with a heart-warming old-school vibe. During races your car moves automatically, and the only buttons you have to worry about are left, right, and brake. Featuring a bunch of different game modes, cars, and tracks, GP Retro offers plenty to do to keep retro fans coming back for more.

Chubbins might not look like much in screenshots, but it’s actually a super hardcore platformer that’s perfect for the Super Meat Boy crowd. Your goal is to make your way from point A to point B by bouncing on from block to block. With perfectly tight controls and lots of new gameplay ideas added as you progress, Chubbins is a well-made game. Don’t expect any checkpoints here– at least not as far as I’ve gotten– because you won’t find any. Each level has to be executed perfectly from start to finish if you want to move on. Chumps and n00bs need not apply.

    Flip Runner

Flip Runner is a gravity-busting endless runner much like Gravity Guy. The twist is that the ground is a line going through the middle of the screen, and you either run along the top of bottom of that line, tapping to switch. Obstacles like spikes and saw blades come at you, and you can collect lightning bolts and shields to reach further distances. It might not sound like much, but once you start moving fast, it strains the brain. If you can handle yet another endless runner, this might be one to check out.

    Ninja Warrior Game

You know Ninja Warrior, that show where contestants have to traverse hyper-challenging obstacle courses in a limited amount of time? Now it’s an iOS game that plays a lot like Mirror’s Edge. You run forward, swiping to jump over pits, dive under obstacles, and roll to survive long falls. There are also deep customization options for those interested in putting hats on their characters. It’s not the prettiest game, but it does what it sets out to do.
