If you’re looking for unique new games for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, try out one of these independent productions. This week’s indie iOS picks let you dive behind cover, steal loot, and even craft your own portmanteaus. Check them out, along with our impressions, straight ahead!
From the makers of VR Mission comes another top-down action game with a military theme. Instead of working through each maze-like mission using stealth like in VR Mission, in Bio Crisis you can automatically hide behind cover to engage in firefights with enemies, like a 2D version of Gears of War. Your ammunition is limited, though, so you’ll have to earn in-game currency to stay in the fight.
Chrono&Cash is a high-score arcade game where you have to pick up sacks of loot while avoiding mobsters and other enemies. You have to pick up the loot in a particular order, too, or you won’t receive nearly as many points. With just left, right, and jump controls, Chrono&Cash is extremely simple, but the bonus objectives and challenging pace kept us playing over and over again. Pick it up if you like OrangePixel’s other games, like Stardash and Meganoid.
Being inside the bubble usually isn’t a good thing, but Bee in a Bubble is a delicate tilt game and a lot of fun. You have to steer your bee through a series of hexes. However, your bee in a bubble will always move straight up, forcing you to turn your iOS device end over end to keep it from flying into obstacles and popping.
We never played AstroWings 1 and 2, but AstroWings3 is a highly competent shoot ’em up that currently costs you nothing to download. The controls are incredibly simple, and even though the enemies and backgrounds aren’t as detailed as they are in shooters like Espgaluda or Bug Princess, you’ll still get the same adrenaline rush from clearing them off your screen.
A portmanteau is a new word that’s created by combining two other words, and Frankenword makes you the mad scientist who gets to create more of them. You’re given two crossword puzzle-like clues, and you can see where the answers overlap. Then, you have to select the right letters to spell out the full word. Frankenword is free to download, and you can pay extra to unlock additional level packs.
