Under The Radar: July 19, 2012

The App Store has an incredible number of games available to purchase or download, but how do you know you’re not wasting your time and money? In this column, we try to focus on the smaller games that are worth your consideration. Here are this week’s indie iOS picks.

Run Fatty Run

When the government decides that Bert’s weight problem needs to be solved for the good of society, they set a tiger loose in the mall to encourage him to take up running. Your goal isn’t really to outrun the tiger– it’s just to outrun the other overweight people in the mall, then catch your breath while they get eaten. The basic gameplay involves tapping on the screen repeatedly to run, but you’ll also have to swipe to barge through obstacles and avoid tempting snacks along the way.

Lapsus

Lapsus is a puzzle game built around the idea of setting up dominoes and watching them fall. Your goal is to drop every domino on the screen with just one swipe, so the dominoes have to connect, even across gaps and between floors. It’s a relaxing game, since you don’t actually have to balance the dominoes like in real life, and you can replay each level for up to three stars if you’re a perfectionist.

Puppy’s Plaything

There seem to be zillions of sliding block games, where you have to move an object to the exit by sliding it all the way across the board. Puppy’s Playthings brings a cute visual style to this genre, letting you control an adorable puppy who keeps slipping on ice. You’ll also be able to collect bonus bones, hit ramps to clear obstacles, and earn multipliers for maintaining a perfect chain of moves.

Goal Defense

Like sliding block games, tower defense games are becoming old hat on the App Store. But Goal Defense at least gives the genre a unique twist, with over-the-top athletes running roughshod through a football stadium to get to the trophy. Your defenses include a variety of sports stars, like pitchers, hammer throwers, and even cheerleaders. The best thing about Goal Defense is its winning art style, with lots of comical characters to upgrade.

Pinball City Paris

Ah, Paris– the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and the giant flippers that keep you bouncing around town. Pinball City Paris is a pinball game where the board is a fanciful version of Paris, complete with charming little buildings and landmarks. You’ll be able to complete missions by hitting targets around town, which will earn you multipliers and extra chances. We especially like the way clips of black and white French movies play at the top of the screen.
