Under The Radar: August 4, 2011

You should never let a good thing pass you by, which is why every week we look for five solid new indie iOS games you might otherwise miss. Here’s this week’s Under The Radar, complete with MMA slot machines, troll brothers, and Martian worms.

Bonkheads HD

Nintendo’s Mario Bros aren’t likely to show up on the iPhone anytime soon, but you can relive the glory days of the original Mario arcade game with Bonkheads HD. You play as a pair of ugly trolls who have to defend their subterranean lair against cats, raccoons, and other critters. Your trolls can flip the animals from below, or hit a central “pow” box, just like Mario and Luigi used to do.

Aces Speed

In this reflex-based card game, you have to slam down a card with a value just above or below the one in the middle of the table. True to its name, a round of Speed goes by quickly, but for added enjoyment you can choose one of five difficulty settings, play against someone on the same device, or upload your high scores to Game Center after a fast run.

MMA Battle Ground Slots

If you admire the physical skill of mixed martial arts fighting, but also enjoy the random chance of slot machines, we’ve got just the game for you. MMA Battle Ground Slots doesn’t forge a new “casino fighter” genre, but it does offer a polished, virtual slot machine with an official MMA look and feel. The most unique thing about MMA Battle Ground Slots is the layout of the reels– they’re arranged inside a squared circle.

Requiem

You know that recurring dream you always have, where you’re being chased by a red-eyed bull through empty cobblestone streets, and have to run, jump, and collect stars on your way to a winged Pegasus? Requiem turns this repressed longing into a first-person platformer with stylish graphics. The level designs seem to be very basic, but we liked Requiem’s psychologically disturbing environments.

Vermes on Mars

Everyone knows that Dune has giant sand worms, but what about Mars? In this sci-fi themed shooter, you control a team of robot drones that have to clear Mars of giant “vermes”. You can move your drones as a unit, then arrange them in a line before switching to targeting mode and firing your machine guns. But be quick about it– you’ve only got a certain amount of time before a dust storm fries your robots’ circuitry.
