Trigger Fist Review

Shooters on iOS don’t get more console-like than this. Trigger Fist is, as the name implies, a game game full of guns, grenades, and… goats. While other shooters have come to iOS, this is one of the most polished. It’s not a port of some highly successful console series, yet it feels as vast as those games. Trigger Fist is beautifully designed, bringing you head-to-head with AI or actual combatants in an addictive shoot-out that gets better the more you play.

Instead of trying for the classic first-person POV, Trigger Fist is a third-person shooter. This allows you to see your character in the war zone and get a good look at the environment. While the screen may look busy with buttons and thumb sticks, the controls are quite easy. A thumb stick in the bottom-left corner controls your movement. Swiping across the rest of the screen rotates your character, and a red thumb stick in the bottom-right fires your weapon. Other buttons allow you to rotate between guns, throw grenades, or melee an opponent for an instant kill. The great thing about this layout is that, in the heat of battle, you don’t often get confused with buttons. It’s all intuitive.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here. This is the war room!

The game isn’t bogged down with a story mode. Instead, it’s divided into four modes of play, each with the option of single player (against AI opponents) or multiplayer (against online opponents via Game Center). All the classic game modes are here: free-for-all, team deathmatch, king of the hill, and sacred goat. Sacred goat may not sound familiar, but it is a humorous take on capture the flag that involves you carrying a goat on your back before your opponent kills you for it.

The game really shines when it comes to your loadouts. In each game, you have the option of playing as one of three types of soldiers: scout, gunner, or rifleman. Each has a unique set of weapons, and each gains experience points separately. Experience unlocks new perks, such as faster reloading or better radar, and new weapons. Once these are unlocked, you can start to customize each loadout to fit you. Even better, you can switch between loadouts while in a match.

Hoofin’ it.

The weapons are classified into three types. Your character always has a primary firearm, like an automatic rifle or Uzi, a handgun, and an explosive weapon, like a rocket or grenade launcher. To better understand each one, the weapons are detailed with ratings, explaining their rate of fire, range, and other important stats. These are rated with a simple A, B, or C, so you can learn which type of weapon suits you best.

Trigger Fist is the type of game that can only get better with time. It seems perfect for periodic updates, perhaps offering new weapons, loadouts, or environments. Right now, it’s a surprising win. The single player and multiplayer are great, and the AI does not take it easy on you. It’s also the type if game in which no one player will play the same as the next. With the customizable screen layout and the upgradable characters, everyone will be a Trigger Fist aficionado soon.
