Tetris Blitz Hands-On Preview

At GDC last week, we had a chance to go hands-on with the first free Tetris game for iOS, Tetris Blitz. Similar to other Blitz games like Bejeweled Blitz and Solitaire Blitz, Tetris Blitz will let you play for a limited amount of time in order to reach a high score that you can brag about on Facebook.

Tetris Blitz uses a very simplified control scheme, to eliminate manual rotating and brick placement and keep you in the high-scoring zone. Outlines of blocks will appear towards the bottom of the screen, and all you have to do is tap on a location for the block to land there. You can still manually adjust your blocks, too, in case you have a better Tetris strategy than the one the game suggests.

Long-time Tetris purists will probably be surprised by the new power-ups in Tetris Blitz. After launch, Tetris Blitz will add a new power-up every week for a year, drastically changing the way the game feels. For example, one of Tetris Blitz’s power-ups bombards the screen with individual, one-block tiles that can fill in any gaps on the screen. Naturally, these power-ups are available for sale via in-app purchase or in-game currency.

Blitz-style games may not appeal to everyone, but the complimentary download price means that Tetris Blitz will reach a huge audience regardless. In some ways, we think of Tetris Blitz as a deluxe demo for the full-sized Tetris app, but with more intense gameplay that only lasts a couple of minutes. Expect to start seeing challenges appear in your Facebook feed after Tetris Blitz launches this Spring.
