Telltale Games Teases Walking Dead Season 2

Telltale Games has posted a Walking Dead Season 2 teaser image to their Facebook Page. The image shows a bloody baseball cap that players of the first season will recognize as Clementine’s. Also, zombies.

The image is accompanied by the line “Keep that hair short…” which people familiar with the series will also remember, and the text “10/28/13 Noon Pacific/3PM Eastern,” hinting at a announcement coming tomorrow. We’re huge fans of this unique adventure series, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us with the next season of the game.

Walking Dead: Season 3 Isn’t Coming this Year, But Something Else Is

Telltale’s PR director Job Stauffer said on Twitter that the next season of the Walking Dead adventure game won’t be launching this year, but something else related to the world of Walking Dead will be. From Touch Arcade:

Yesterday, Stauffer clarified on his Twitter account that TWD S3 won’t be starting in 2015 “but what I am seeing this week will be, and it is insanely cool.” Now, I’m wondering whether what Stauffer will be checking out is related to Fear the Walking Dead, the upcoming spin-off  set in Los Angeles. Or, perhaps, it could be another special episode like The Walking Dead: 400 Days. Personally I still love TWD Telltale games so anything related to that is fine by me. What are you hoping to see?

Game of the Month, January 2014: Walking Dead: The Game – Season 2

Traditionally January is a slow month in the gaming world, and I guess if you compare it to December that remains true in 2014. But that doesn’t mean nothing good came out to kick off the year right. Out of a handful of Must Haves, our favorite this month was Walking Dead: The Game – Season 2.

Its title may be a mouthful, but the newest installment in the Walking Dead adventure game series from Telltale packs a punch– a punch right through the flimsy skull of a zombie. The game picks up right where the original left off, with you taking the role of Clementine and trying to make your way in a brutal post-apocalyptic world.

Violence is the way of things once the dead start to rise, so much of the game has you wandering around, trying not to get killed by hungry zombies or survival-hardened humans. Just like in the first game, the graphics are great and the atmosphere is relentlessly dark. You make tough decisions, meet new people, kill some of them, and even take on a pet. We can’t wait to play more when the next installment hits.

Our runner-up for Game of the Month is Castle Doombad from Adult Swim Games. Here you play as Dr. Lord Evilstein, a villain whose lair keeps being invaded by pesky heroes. It’s your job to outfit your castle with intricate traps to stop them. It’s cartoonish, puzzly, and a whole lot of fun.

Congratulation to Telltale Games and Adult Swim Games for making our two favorite titles in another month of great games. Also be sure to check out our other Must Have titles for January: Joe Danger Infinity, RoboCop, MovieCat 2, and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Walking Dead: The Game – Season 2 Review

In case you were under the impression that season two of The Walking Dead game would be less brutal than season one, the prologue will recalibrate your expectations. The game kicks off by giving the characters a shimmer of hope and then stomping it out. The world is in shambles, the dead rise to feed on the living, and survivors are left to fight for the scraps. Welcome to hell.

If you played the original game and still have the app on your device, the choices you made are incorporated into the story of season two. If not, the game picks random choices for you. It starts with a “previously on” segment to get you caught up on the story. Although new players won’t have much trouble figuring out what’s going on, you really ought to play the first season before this one. For my money, it’s one of the best games on the App Store.

This time around you play as Clementine, the girl from the first game. Winter is closing in, and the goal is the same as always: to survive at all costs. The game starts out at a gradual pace, with you doing mundane things like using a public restroom and tending to a campfire. But this is The Walking Dead, so you never know when a zombie will pop out or a group of apocalypse-hardened humans will show up to take your possessions or worse.

Once again, much of the game is hands-off storytelling. Breaks in the story have you exploring small areas, checking items, navigating conversation threads, and making tough choices. Action sequences play out the same way as before, with quick-time events that have you tap or swipe the screen on command. The game is a little choppy even on the newest devices, so occasionally your inputs might not register. Even if you fail a quick-time event, you’re never sent back far.

The acting is good overall, but some characters sound better than others. The cell-shaded graphics are gorgeous, but the occasional choppiness is a bummer. None of these issues really detract from the experience. The bleak atmosphere the game creates goes a long way toward ironing over any drawbacks. It may be too bleak for some people who don’t want to wallow in darkness, but the game offers enough hope to make me want to keep following it.

No matter how much of a downer the game is, and whatever its minor deficiencies, the story and characters are more than enough to keep most gamers locked in. Even if you didn’t play the original– which you absolutely should– it’s easy to grasp what’s going on. This is a simple story of survival, and it’s well told. Rarely do games even attempt storytelling on this level, let alone succeed. Despite the game’s utter bleakness, it’s great to be back in the world of The Walking Dead. I can’t wait for Episode 2.
