The codebreakers at PocketGamer were right: There is a Splinter Cell iPhone game in the works, and we've played it. Read on to hear about what we did when put into the sneaky shoes of Sam Fisher.

First thing we did was die a lot. Did we mention stealth games are not our strong suit? When we managed to avoid blowing our cover and going "Rambo", the sneakier tricks at Sam's disposal became much, much more impressive.

For example, you can sneak up behind a guard who's staring ahead intently, perhaps thinking about what's waiting for him in the refrigerator at home, and snap his neck. You can then shoot out the nearby floodlights, and take cover behind some crates with a context-sensitive button press.

While you're in cover, two more guards come into view. You can then press a multi-target marker button, placing red crosshairs over each bad guy. One more button press, this time the "execute" button, and Sam will fire off two quick headshots. Both guards will fall down dead without making a peep. You can pull this same multi-targeting trick using a convex mirror stuck under a closed door, and Sam will take out everyone in the room as soon as you give the signal.

Other fancy spy tricks we were told about but didn't get to try ourselves include interrogating bad guys by smashing them into walls, and placing traps using camera grenades with remote detonation.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction on iPhone looks like it will retain a lot of the features of its console big brother, while still being fairly accessible for us bumbling types. Your objectives are sometimes "projected" onto certain objects in the environment, elegantly combining the game world and heads-up display. The storyline, which has Sam on the outs from secret spy agency Third Echelon and searching for his daughter's killer, is the same as the console game.

On the iPhone, you're eased into the action a little more with an objective pointer, and position indicators which tell you the best spots to hide in the shadows. We're not great infiltrators, so we appreciated these additions, but seasoned spies won't have the option to turn them off for a greater challenge.

While most of the game involves being stealthy and smart, we did play one glorious level of unbridled action. Set in Iraq, Sam dons desert camouflage and goes to war, shooting an assault rifle from cover and tossing grenades every few feet. During all this chaos, weather effects (like a whirling sandstorm in Iraq) really wowed us.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction looks and plays great, and it's rare that we see such a sophisticated stealth game on this platform. It'll be out later this month, but better keep your excitement muted, so the guards don't hear you.

Why do you always have hands-on without a video or screenshot? Great preview anyways

    1. ADPodolsky March 9th, 2010

Gameloft wouldn't let us take video at this time and screenshots have not been released. I always prefer to post a preview with pretty pictures, but sometimes it's just not possible. Screenshots are coming tomorrow.

Oh man, I am so excited for this one. Thanks for finding out about that "projection" thing I posted about in my comment on the Splinter Cell announcement article, that was the feature I was most interested in seeing implemented on the iPhone version. I'll be interested to see how Gameloft handles stealth action with Splinter Cell

    1. ADPodolsky March 9th, 2010

I asked about that specifically for you, Jordan. :-D

  4. nielololek March 9th, 2010

  5. Eggbert March 9th, 2010

    Sounds incredible.

  6. ADPodolsky March 9th, 2010

It is a third person shooter, more like Terminator Salvation. I'm sure when the screens come out they will be awesome.

  7. Biron3000 March 9th, 2010

It's a third person shooter?! Thank. God. Gameloft has been doing so well with iPhone games. If it's anywhere near as good as their other recent games like Sandstorm or NOVA, it should be amazing.

  8. nielololek March 10th, 2010

And where are the screenshots ? :(

  9. Biron3000 March 10th, 2010

Gameloft has become my favorite iPhone game developer. Thanks for the screenshots. It looks great. Did they have any other control scheme options for the camera, like a second virtual stick or tilt controls like in COD: Zombies?

    1. ADPodolsky March 11th, 2010

Unfortunately I did not check out the other control or camera options, sorry.

  12. stupidcowboy March 13th, 2010

Hopefully, Zombie Infection and Splinter Cell will shut up the idiots who have never played an iPhone game in their lives but say the iPhone isn't a gaming system.

  13. Paco March 15th, 2010

Anyone have release dates for Zombie Infection, Splinter Cell, or that fishing game Gameloft is doing? Please post them if you find out anything!

  18. cal G. April 13th, 2010

    1. cal G. April 13th, 2010

also, is it me, or have the graphics/interface been slightly tweaked?

  19. Sknoob728 April 19th, 2010

Are the controls like MC sandstorm and NOVA where you look around by dragging a finger across the screen and moving with a pad?

  20. Thomas April 27th, 2010

Could someone please tell me if there's climbing and acrobatics like in the console version please?

  21. spammy April 28th, 2010

    1. Biron3000 May 13th, 2010

      http://www.samsnewmission.com/images/soon_04.jpg

I found this on Sam's New Mission. Hooray for website loyalty.

  24. Seb May 13th, 2010

I hope you can turn that stuff off in the final version. I've been playing stealth games for years, the fun is figuring out the perfect strategy, I dont want to be told the best place to hide. Nevertheless, looks like it could be great.

  25. David Rogers May 13th, 2010

Will there be an ipad version?

    1. Chris_R May 14th, 2010

No word on it yet, but it's a safe assumption.
