STP 2.0: Welcome To The Next Level

Feature Posted by Steve Palley, June 30th, 2009

This isn't your dad's iPhone gaming. We're heading fast towards Year 2 of the App Store, and the ground has shifted under our feet. $5.99 is the new $9.99, beefy new iPhones are breaking speed records, microtransactions are picking up steam... oh, and we're closing in on 15,000 iPhone games.

The whole enterprise has mutated into something as complicated and messy as it is unique and awesome. A simple blog no longer suffices to cover the madness.

And that's why STP isn't just a blog any more.

Here's a quick rundown on the site's major new features:

Full Gamespaces

Every game in our database now has its own dedicated page where you can find its description, stories, reviews, ratings, screens and videos.

A typical game space

User Ratings

Readers can now rate games themselves using our four-point scale.

Game browsing

On our new Games page, you can search our full database by genre, game type, and feature set. Looking for Bluetooth multiplayer dice games? We can hook you up.

Find any kind of game, any time. (Game must exist)

Related games

Every Gamespace and review automatically points you to games of the same type, so you can compare and contrast before deciding what to buy.

App Store section

We'll tell you which games are on sale, which have just been updated, and what's the latest on the App Store.

Find the best games at the best price.

Improved search

Search by developer, game name, or subject. Search results are sorted into games and stories.

Company pages

Each developer now has its own page, with all its games listed.

STP Video

STP's videos now have their own page.

Social discovery

It's now much easier to send our articles to services like Digg, Reddit, and Facebook.

Take a look around, and let us know what you think in the Comments! Also, if you notice any bugs, please send a note to webmaster@slidetoplay.com. We'll need your help to get everything ship-shape ASAP.

    Very cool upgrade!
And the user rating is a nice feature.
    Congrats!

  2. pante June 30th, 2009

congratulations. looks great, works great. :)

  3. Adam_B June 30th, 2009

It's so relieving and gratifying to finally see this get online.

Feedback welcome, and of course, so are problems or whatever else. I just zapped a bug that was causing slow homepage laods I believe, but let me know if you see anything else like that.

  4. RtojP June 30th, 2009

    That's really cool
I really like that people can now rate the games and I like that you can watch the price discounts :)

Love the update! It really looks slick and is easy to navigate. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to 'track' our favorite apps so we know we could get an alert when, say, toki tori drops to 0.99 for a weekend :).

I really like the new Game Overview page, but was finding it hard to get there from a review off the homepage. It looks like you can click the big 'boxshot' icon at the top of the review, but, intuitively, I thought it would open a lightbox with a bigger image. It also looks like you can get there from the bottom of the review under "related games", but I also found that counterintuitive to find the 'main' game listed under its corresponding 'related' games. From a focus group of one, I kept wanting to click the green "app store page" button to get to the overview. Perhaps it would make sense to have two buttons there instead, one that says "Buy" and one that says "Game Overview" (as you can see I have amazing copy writing skills :). All nitpicking aside, congrats on the new site!

It's not easy finding the publisher pages. Would be nice if you have it at some prominent place rather than on the game page (only as a hyperlink on Publisher's name) :)

Now I can fix your rating on circuit_strike.one review :) http://www.slidetoplay.com/game/circuitstrikeone

  8. RtojP June 30th, 2009

One problem: if you filter games in anyway and if you continue after that to the next page I'll bring you atomtaic to the second page of all games without any filter. For the rest, I think, everything is fine

  9. snake June 30th, 2009

    Congrats!

  10. kelvin June 30th, 2009

Ha! Thanks, Nacho. You'll still have some work to do on the App Store, though.

  11. Adam_B June 30th, 2009

RtojP: Thanks for the report. I fixed that bug.. You should now be able to go through multiple pages of results filtered by the checkboxes on top without a problem.

  12. superbad June 30th, 2009

    w/e Nacho.

I agree with their CSone rating. BTW. I scored it a 2 as well and brought it down to half a point. Mwuahahaha.

  13. klouud June 30th, 2009

Just great! Very well done! Bravo guys! I only have one suggestion (so far) - can we quote a person so they know we are replying to them? I know this will make discussions longer in terms of space... but it would be nice. You could compress the quote somehow... smaller font maybe?

    great job

    tim

    Beautiful... just beautiful!
I was really looking forward to this thing going live.
Kudos to the site's designers / developers,
    you guys kick ass!

I love our redesign! Looks Fantastic, and I see more users are becoming active now.

  17. RtojP June 30th, 2009

    @ Adam_B
Good job, but did you know that if you'll rate by score that you'll have the same problem? Anyways keep up the good work : )

    @iKryptic
Yeah true : ) I also just activated myself ;-)

  18. Adam_B June 30th, 2009

@RtojP D'oh! I believe I fixed it for good this time :) Thanks for the heads-up.

  19. jshmrsn June 30th, 2009

Awesome! I'm so excited to see this finally go live :-)
This absolutely sets STP apart from any other iPhone review site.

  20. jeffyg3 June 30th, 2009

I have a great idea about this new update... Since this an iPhone game review site, why not build a special section that is formatted to view on the iPhone? It makes sense, we're out browsing on our iPhones about what new game to get, this is an iPhone site, why not be the first iPhone game review site to have a page specially formatted to view on the iPhone? Why don't more iPhone sites do this? I know I would be more likely to browse STP much more often on my iPhone if it was specially formatted for it....heck I'm even typing this on my ophone, just saying, if you guys really want to seperate yourselves from the pack, why not really cater to the iPhone user and make pages specially made to fit nicely for iPhone, like others sites do like fox news, gamespot, etc

  21. Steve_P June 30th, 2009

jeffyg3: it's on our roadmap. stay tuned.

  22. jborthwick July 1st, 2009

ah hah! sorry that this is completely off topic, but following up on my previous comment:

toki tori is on sale for 0.99 cents (80% off)!

now back to your regularly scheduled programming:

  23. sayam July 5th, 2009

OT: Who designed and added all the features exactly?
