Slide To Play Q and A: Warm Gun

News Posted by Chris Reed, August 11th, 2011

Ever since Infinity Blade showed us the graphical power of the Unreal Engine on iOS, we've been excited to see what other developers do with it. If the trailer below is any indication, the folks at Emotional Robots appear to have something special planned for us with Warm Gun, an Unreal-powered online shooter that's coming out this summer. We chatted with Joe Cleary, the owner and founder of Emotional Robots, about the upcoming release.

What drew you to the post-apocalyptic, steampunk, wild west setting?

Warm Gun (PC) was started about four years ago, and at that time it seemed like all FPS games were either space marines, zombies or some sort of military combat style. We knew that we wanted to make something a little different and had been toying around with the idea of a Wild West game, but the traditional style of a western game felt a little boring. We had some rough ideas laid out and then it hit... "The Second Coming of the Wild West". This one sentence summed it all up. A Wild West game set in a post apocalyptic world where mankind has regressed back to the days of lawlessness and gunslingers. A EUREKA! moment as they say.

There it was, this Mad Max style setting where the world is falling apart and mankind has stepped back into the 1880's for the second time. It's really just as simple as that... "Mad Max" meets "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly", toss in some steampunk to help make the weapons and characters bad ass and we are good to go. Warm Gun was born.

What character classes will be available, and what are each of their strengths or special abilities (if applicable)?

The iOS version will ship with four character classes: The Preacher, Blacksmith, 49er and Shaman. All of the characters come equipped with specific weapon load outs and their own physical attributes. The preacher is your all-around mid range character-- he can hold his own in any battle. The Blacksmith is a tank and can take tons of punishment while dealing huge amounts of damage. The 49er is built for players who like things that go "Boom!" The Shaman is agile and just plain deadly with his AK and electrified cow-skull cattle prod.

All in all we really try to incorporate a variety of play styles so that gamers can find a character to identify with and become a master with that class. Anyone can pick up and play, but to truly master a character's style takes time and dedication. These characters are all unique in every way; run speed, health, damage, grenade throwing distance, weapons and attack range are just a few of the variations. I'm not going to spoil all the fun-- I'll leave you guys to figure it all out when you get your hands on it.

How many maps will be available in the game? Do any of them have unique properties or dynamics? If so, can you describe one?

For our iOS launch we have included five diverse environments. Each map has a unique setting with a variety of exclusive traps and triggers. One of the best examples would be "Overdrive". The map is set within the canyon walls of Old Arizona and features numerous traps and triggered events. Elements such as exploding TNT barrels, falling roof sections and vaulted catwalks that allow players access to new areas are just a few of the key elements.

Will players be able to chat with each other either using text or voice while they play?

We do have text chat integrated right now but unfortunately it's not as robust as we want it to be. Same story for the in game voice-- things are still being worked on and at this point I can't give you a definite yes or no. What I can say though is that if these features don't make the initial launch they will be something for us to include as a free update later on.

Will Warm Gun be a universal app, or will there be separate versions for iPhone and iPad?

Warm Gun is universal across all supported devices. We are aiming for legacy devices such as the 3GS all the way up to the iPad 2. The game's visuals do change from device to device but gameplay is 100% the same and you won't need to purchase multiple versions.

When will the game release, and how much will it cost?

Unfortunately at this time I cannot give you an exact release date as we are still neck deep in development. I can however tell you this... we really want the game to launch this summer and we're working at a feverish pace to get everything wrapped up in both the development and business end of things.

Great graphics and art but sadly it is another multiplayer shooter. These graphics deserved a single player campaign.

  6. Jeff August 12th, 2011

This game looks amazing, but call me when there's a single player campaign.

The 3GS is already considered a legacy device? They should put that note beside the floor display since it's still selling.

No single player? Well, in that case: I don't care.
