Rockstar's Sam Houser Confirms GTA: Chinatown Wars For iPhone

UPDATE: January 17th, 2010

Chinatown Wars is now available on the App Store for $9.99. Although it missed its 2009 release target by a few weeks, we're too busy building up our gang to argue about it now. We'll have our review for you soon.

Is it too late for April Fool's? After a Touch Arcade forum poster using the name "Gameloft" pretended to announce a GTA: Chinatown Wars port, we're a bit skeptical when it comes to "Chinatown Wars coming to the iPhone" announcements. But it seems now that Kotaku has confirmed the real deal from Rockstar's President, Sam Houser.

Kotaku reports that Sam Houser told them in an interview, "Chinatown Wars is a perfect match for the iPhone and iPod touch. We are very excited to bring this incredibly ambitious version of Liberty City, with this level of detail and immersive gameplay on Apple's new gaming platforms."

Well, there you have it. Yet another best-selling franchise finds its home on the iPhone. While we're looking forward to playing Chinatown Wars on the iPhone ourselves, we have to wonder: will Apple force Rockstar to tone down the naughty content?

Its official! Rockstar even has it on their site: http://www.rockstargames.com/news/2009/08/31/381/grand_theft_auto_chinatown_wars_also_coming_to_iphone™_and_ipod®_touch

I'm dying to see what they'll charge for this. Is Rockstar ballsy enough to launch at $19.99? It'd be worth every penny, but I'd be curious to observe how many units it'd sell at that "premium" price.

    Great news though!

They should and will. The DS/PSP versions (which are the best on both platforms, btw) are $30+, and I don't think Rockstar wants to kill sales on those consoles by releasing roughly the same game for $10 or less.

Nope, they are indeed sticking to $9.99

          Such a great deal.

I am dying to see how they port this over so we can move without some kind of on screen controls. The real drawback to this is that the iPhone is lacking (in the sense) that everything is virtual. Here is to hoping for something absolutely amazing out of the Rockstar folks.
