Ravensword Rejected By Apple For Using Unity Engine

UPDATE: November 17th, 2009

Apple must have put the re-submitted version of Ravensword: The Fallen King on the approval fast track, because it appeared in the App Store today. We're hard at work on our review, but if you just can't wait, you can purchase it for $6.99 now.

In an email proclaiming today a "black Friday the 13th", Chillingo told us that Ravensword has been rejected by Apple for using the Unity engine, which has API calls in its code used by another developer, Storm8, to collect personal information from users. Chillingo's email can be found on the next page.

Chillingo's email to us:

You have probably already heard, but in case you did not:

Chillingo's latest iPhone epic Ravensword: The Fallen King has been rejected by Apple, alongside other games based on the Unity engine. Ravensword like many other Unity games have found themselves caught in the crossfire between Apple, Storm8, and API calls which exist inside of all Unity games. The same APIs were used by iMobsters developer Storm8 to solicit contact information from players. While Ravensword and other Unity-built games do not collect information from users, Apple rejected the game and others as a measure to prevent such from happening again.

Ravensword: The Fallen King did use these APIs. As such, they've since been removed and the game has been resubmitted.

We'll keep you updated with the latest on this situation, but importantly, Ravensword will be resubmitted without the questionable APIs.

It's gotta be great being an iPhone app developer. Your app gets rejected for using an API that another developer used to violate a TOS that hasn't been defined anywhere.

    Nice.

Recently, some Unity customers who have been very anxious to get their iPhone game approved by Apple, have received a rejection notice because they use something that was no longer approved by the Apple rules.
Unity has been working hard on this issue as it stalls and affects our iPhone developer customers. We were able to correct the issue 2 days after we first heard about it and delivered that fix to those who had reported the problem. Many of them have been able to already resubmit their application to Apple.
Unity will be releasing this new version, Unity iPhone 1.5.1, publicly on our website sometime next in the w/c 16th Nov. In the meantime, if you have an urgent need or concern, please contact oleg@unity3d.com and request an iPhone build with this issue fixed.

Note that Unity games already on the app store are not affected by this.
