iOS 5 Installation Issues Abound

News Posted by Chris Reed, October 12th, 2011

Today is the big day: iOS 5 has hit iTunes. Unfortunately, not everyone is experiencing a smooth installation process. Many, myself included, have successfully downloaded the update, but it fails to install because of a vague error that stops the progress in its tracks. We asked our Twitter followers if they were having trouble, too, and nearly all of the people who responded said they were seeing similar errors.

iOS 5 is a major update, containing over 200 new features, including a revamped notification system, a Game Center update, wireless syncing, iCloud integration, and many other new features and tweaks. We're really looking forward to getting our hands on it... if only it would install.

These types of issues are fairly common for launches of popular system updates because of the sheer number of people downloading and installing them at the same time. We're hoping Apple fixes things on their end quickly.

What about you? Have you had the same trouble downloading iOS 5, or did it install without issue? Let us know in the comments.

Yep. Tried several times since around 6.30pm UK time. Get a 3200 error - not listed in Apples error code dictionary, but apparently it's a busy server problem.

I had the same problem. Instead of clicking "Check for update", just click "Restore" and it will intall iOS5

It updated fine on my iPad but when I tried my Touch I got that error, I'm sure it'll work fine once the servers aren't so stressed. The only complaint I have so far is you can't put the newsstand app in a folder.

I also downloaded ios5 successfully, but I'm having the same 3200 error issue here in Spain. I also believe it has to do with servers collapsing because of the insame number of update requests they must be receiving.

The question which I make myself is: Why do they release ios5 worldwide at the same time? Why not do it as with the "Thursday-ahoy" releases and make it appear in each country when the new day comes? This way they'd be able to control a bit more the simultaneous access to their servers... Anyway, if I'm not successful this time around, I'll leave it for tomorrow. It's now more than midnight here in Spain...

first I had trouble downloading itunes 10.5..got that worked out and now keep getting error 3200 when trying to install ios5. Found this on a different site.

"many users seeing "Error 3200" while attempting to upgrade to iOS 5. Speculation points to this just being related to Apple's servers being overloaded, and some users are seeing success after multiple attempts.

At this point, simply waiting and retrying seems to be the best solution."

Yes, I had some problems but not it's updated.
I'm only disappointed because Apple removed multitouch gestures from first gen iPads :-/

I didn't download it yet because I haven't gotten around to downloading iTunes 10. I was about to do so when I saw this article. Good thing I didn't go through with it…

Well I tried to download and install the update but I got an error and it forced my iPod to restore itself from backup and it took ages but when it finally finished its on iOS 5? So who knows what was going on but all my games are there but it removes all your music and you have to put it all back on again. But woohoo iOS 5 is looking cool so far

I had to reboot twice to get rid of the error. Then after I thought I was about done, it was resorting my apps for an hour and a half. Also it goes straight to wireless sync which really messed me up, but now it's working great.

I HATE IT WHEN APPS RESORT

Seriously. I have such an obsession with keeping apps in their proper place that I'm almost wondering if I'm mildly autistic.

The reason it sends the error is because apple's servers are getting swamped by everyone trying to download iOS 5 at the same time. Just keep trying and you'll get through.

So there we are. I left the update for today and I got my iphone 4 updated without a single error. It took more than 3 hours though... But my 14GB of occupied space (apps, photos, etc.) are there as always. Nice :-)

Use RESTORE not update, after iOS has downloaded. Myself and a friend had problems with update, RESTORE worked fine.
