Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition Announced

UPDATE: October 17th, 2011

It looks like iOS gamers who don't own the latest iOS hardware but are hoping to play Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition just might be getting their wish. Gaming site Kotaku has confirmed with Rockstar Games that GTA III will be coming to "single-core iOS devices in the future."

The statement is vague, but it's good news for carjack-loving, open world-exploring iOS gamers who were disappointed that the original announcement said the game would be limited strictly to gamers with dual-core devices-- namely, an iPhone 4S or iPad 2. However, they didn't specify when the game will be available to people with older hardware.

Rockstar announced today that they'll be bringing Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition to iOS later this fall. We don't know much about the game, like how it will be different from the 2001 original, or how much it will cost. Unfortunately, we do know that the game will only be playable on the very latest Apple devices: the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. They didn't release any screenshots or videos of the game in action, but they did give us the poster below.

When the game comes out, it will be the second GTA game to hit the App Store, after Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. We thought Rockstar did an incredible job with Chinatown Wars-- we even awarded it game of the year for 2010. Of course, that game was originally released for the Nintendo DS, so it was meant to be a handheld game from the start. Whether Grand Theft Auto III can make a smooth transition to iOS remains to be seen... provided you have the newest iPhone or iPad, that is.

Hope they make it a game that runs on 4th Gen devices... I mean, how come they are not gonna include them? Maybe they're not the latest hardware, but they're pretty good.... ¬¬

HOLY SH!!!T. Since I got the iPhone 3GS and started seeing those amazing games I dreamed about 3D GTA. If they can somehow make SA then it would be just amazing.

get the game on pc if you want it in hd, by the way, hd only means higher resolution, its the exact same game a little sharper...

      1. Mike October 14th, 2011

        Hey Tom, read this:

Read what? HD is only a measure of resolution, that's my point.

        Twice :)

  6. pholly October 13th, 2011

Wow, it really doesn't work on any devices other than the 4s and iPad 2. I thought maybe the person who wrote this just left it out by accident, wrong. That makes no sense at all unless they're upgrading the visuals or they suck at porting stuff. It'll probably be overpriced anyway.

    1. tom October 13th, 2011

not really, the iPod touch 4 might not have the necessary power

This sounds good in theory but has anyone actually played GTA III recently? I loved that game back in the day, but I don't think it's really aged well.

Remember having to do all that repeat driving if you failed a mission? Plus there were no planes, copters, boats or even motorcycles. Combat was pretty sloppy with no cover system, and touching water meant instant death.

I've recently been playing Liberty City Stories for the PSP -- which is very similar to GTA III and takes place in the same version of Liberty City -- and I have to say that overall it's been more of a chore than a treat.

But who knows, maybe the 10th Anniversary edition will modernize the game a little bit.

    1. JoelSixPack October 14th, 2011

Actually, I guess GTA III did have two or three boats and a plane with chopped off wings that was virtually impossible to fly.

  12. sebgo October 14th, 2011

Personally, I haven't been a fan of the series (Only played Vice City on PC and Chinatown Wars on Nintendo DS), but I think porting a game to a handheld device is something to look forward to. What a shame they won't add support for 4th gen devices (Are they crazy? Those devices are still good!).

I don't think they will get something good out of this...

  13. I Pity The Fools October 14th, 2011

The 4th gen devices are still "new" I don't see why they don't deserve to have this game... No matter how big or awesome gfx-wise it's gonna be, but Gangstar games, and Infinity Blade are working on 4th gens!

  14. ADR October 14th, 2011

I have a feeling that this game will be eventually ported to 4th gen devices but without retina display or lower graphic than 4s/ipad 2.

  15. donkeyhigh October 14th, 2011

The screens at touchgen are from the Xbox version. It literarily says so with bold text right under the pictures.
Gta3 was the worst gta. Gta London was better. Only iPhone4s? If this is the new direction for apple, I'm sensing allot of new android customers next year.

    1. Maniacfive October 17th, 2011

If this is the new direction for Apple...

Because Apple are directly responsible for Rockstars decisions on what they develop for? /rollseyes

TBH this is no different to those Android apps that require the device to have a Tegra chip. Technology moves on. 4th gen equipment is 18months or 12 months old. Sorry, thats not new.

    2. Tom October 17th, 2011

It's not in any way Apple's decision, it's rockstar's. Also Android phones make you upgrade way more often... This game will only run on the best Android phones
