UPDATE: February 2nd, 2011

Devil May Cry 4 Refrain is now available for the introductory price of $1.99! We really enjoyed playing this one in our preview, so buy it now if you love the series, or wait for our in-depth review soon.

Devils and demons are everywhere on the App Store, from gross-out shooters like iRequiem to adorable hell-raisers like Hellkid. Later this month, Capcom's summoning one of their biggest demons to the App Store: Devil May Cry 4 Refrain.

This 3D action game will follow the same plot as the console game, with players controlling Nero instead of series regular Dante. Nero has guns, a big sword, and a demon hand that can be used for grab attacks. You can choose whether you want the guns and sword to be combined into one attack button, or two.

Nero has 10 levels to explore, which are laid out in a maze-like series of rooms. A map in the corner lets you know which way to go, and at the end of one stage we encountered a huge hellhound serving as the main boss.

Like in the console games, Nero will absorb red orbs from the enemies he kills, allowing you to upgrade and unlock new attacks. The goal with these new attacks, the developer told us, is to maintain the "cool feeling" of linking combos even with a simplified control scheme.

While we didn't get to spend as much time with this game as we'd like, we won't have to wait long for the final version. It'll be out by the end of January, and it'll be followed up later with updates that will add Dante as a playable character. In addition, it's possible that extra challenge modes will be added in an update, beyond the game's story mode.

The game certainly looks good, with Retina-rich graphics and some quality animation. We're not sure yet if the rhythm of the console game will come across well in the handheld version, since Capcom iPhone games like Resident Evil 4 and Dead Rising Mobile have recently emphasized their quick playability over depth. We'll give you the final verdict on Devil May Cry 4 Refrain when the game launches later this month for $6.99.

The idea to make a DMC game on iPhone is great, but the execution doesn't seem to be that great. Why do the graphics look like first generation Dreamcast graphics? After seeing iPhone games like Infinity Blade, Dead Space, and N.O.V.A 2, I would think that Capcom would start stepping up their graphics game for the new year.

The iPhone can smoothly and easily run the Unreal Engine, so why does Devil May Cry 4 on the iPhone look like a Nintendo DSi game? In terms of processing power, the iPhone is more powerful than the original X-BOX, and the Nintendo Wii, so why does this game look worse than anything on either of those systems?!? I expected more out of you Capcom.

the gameplay looks great! however, it seems that the graphic and camera orientation are a bit not right..

Why does this look like a Sega Saturn game? Why are the graphics so bad? After seeing Dead Space, Rage HD, and Infinity Blade on the iPhone, there is no excuse for graphics to look this bad.

You cant play as Dante? But stills good tho

feels like having a java powered sony ericsson... am I the only one thinking this game is ugly as hell ? even the environnements are ugly, bad lightning, square rooms, the list goes on. meh, at least the gameplay is not bad, it's quite good, actually. but you gotta like playing a "best of" game, like "resident evil platinium" is... its definitly not a decent app, but an app worth its price. it won't be such a good deal when the price will rise to "normal" get it while its cheap

altough the gameplay is good, but the graphics and the square rooms are just irritating.. I'm feeling like i'm not playing in my iphone, but a crappy phone with a java 3d support..
      but i think it's worthed for $1.99..

This game looks fun, but the graphics are ugly. This looks like a Dreamcast game, I'm pretty sure the iPhone can pump out much better looking games then this (Devil May Cry 4: Refrain).
