UPDATE: November 2nd, 2011
Usually, app updates add value to games by introducing new content, tweaks, or abilities. The latest Capcom Arcade update, however, removes value from the game. It's a shame because, since its launch, Capcom Arcade has been one of our very favorite freemium apps. So what's wrong with this update?

Now, instead of being given three free credits a day, you get 10 credits, period. Since the app contains 12 games, you can't even take all of the games for a spin once without paying money. You can still buy 10 more credits for a buck, or you can purchase unlimited access to the individual games for between $0.99 and $2.99 apiece, or the whole set for $9.99.
But prior to this update, the app's biggest draw was the free daily credits. It meant you could keep coming back every day to play in a limited capacity for free. And if you really liked a game, you could purchase full access to it. Capcom Arcade is still a great collection of games, but with such a limited offering of free credits, it's not as appealing as it used to be.
UPDATE: January 12th, 2011
When they released the freemium emulator Capcom Arcade, Capcom promised to add a new game to it each month. True to their word, in December they gave us Street Fighter II' - Championship Edition, and now for January we get the 1985 action platformer Ghosts 'n Goblins.
Ghosts 'n Goblins is the first game in the series-- a series that's still active today. In it, you play as Sir Arthur, and your goal is to rescue Princess Prin Prin from Satan himself by fighting through legions of (you guessed it) ghosts, goblins, and undead beasties.
Just like the other games in Capcom Arcade, the version here is an exact port of the original. What that means, of course, is that it's one of the most punishingly difficult games ever made. If you can get past the first level, we salute you.
So download the update, try out Ghosts 'n Goblins with a couple of free daily tokens, and if you're up to the challenge, just buy it. Without unlimited tokens, you're not likely to get very far.
UPDATE: December 23rd, 2010
Capcom Arcade has been updated with a few small changes and one pretty big addition. The small changes include control tweaks on a few of the games and new conditions under which the game's advertisements will disappear (hint: it's when you spend money). The bigger addition is that you'll find a new arcade cabinet in the line-up, Street Fighter II' - Championship Edition.
The differences between this and the original Street Fighter II (which is still available in the game) are that the fighting moves a little faster, and you can play as the boss characters, Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M Bison. The faster speed isn't incredibly noticeable-- the big speed boost would come with the release of Street Fighter II' - Hyper Fighting-- but it does make the fighting a little more visceral and fun. Playing as the boss characters is, of course, a welcome addition.
While we're glad to have Championship Edition to play in Capcom Arcade, it seems silly to include two Street Fighter II games that are so similar in one app. Where's Bionic Commando, Gun.Smoke, or any other Capcom arcade classic from the days of yore? Since Capcom has promised to add a new game each month, apparently we'll just have to wait.
The idea behind Capcom Arcade is pretty brilliant. They made iPhone ports of four classic arcade games, bundled them together, and released them in a freemium compilation. When you open the app, you enter into a virtual arcade that contains a row of game cabinets, including Street Fighter II, 1942, Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, and Commando. That's already a good selection of games, and Capcom says more will be released each month.
This is a freemium game, so you don't have to pay anything if you don't want to. Your allowance is three free game tokens per day. If you want to play more than that, you can purchase 10 tokens for a buck, or buy unlimited access to the games for $2.99 apiece. This is one of the best instances of freemium gaming we've seen yet: It offers players the option to sample, dabble, or purchase the games, with a pricing structure that makes sense. Of course, a compilation is only as strong as its content, so how are the games themselves?

Overflowing with realism.
Mostly excellent. They’re direct ports from their arcade counterparts, so they have the exact same graphics and difficulty. Street Fighter II is the original classic fighting game, so don’t expect to play as Vega or M Bison, as bosses weren’t playable until the Championship Edition. Ghouls ‘N Ghosts is the same tough-as-nails action platformer it's always been, while 1942 and Commando are pretty basic top-down shooters. All of them run smoothly, although we noticed a negligible amount of slowdown in Street Fighter II.
In addition to looking exactly like their arcade counterparts, the games also act the same. So you’ll have to spend a token if you want to continue playing after you lose two rounds in Street Fighter II or run out of lives in the other games. If you earn a high score, you’ll be asked to enter your initials for the leaderboard. Unfortunately, the leaderboards aren’t online, but you can post your scores to Facebook or Twitter if you want to bug your friends.
The main things Capcom changed in these games are the control schemes, and all of them work very well on the touchscreen. Street Fighter II and Commando use the big analog stick from Street Fighter IV to good effect. 1942 uses touch-and-drag controls, which work perfectly for the genre, while Ghouls ‘N Ghosts has a four-way D-pad that suits its 2D platforming just fine. At any time, you can look at instructions for how to play the games, but since they were designed for the arcade they’re not tough to figure out.

I feel like I'm forgetting something...
This compilation does offer a few optional tweaks that were unavailable in the olden days. Each game gives you the option to select the “original difficulty” or a supposedly easier “iPhone difficulty," but we didn’t see much of a difference between the two, as both are plenty difficult. Also, you can buy cheats for the games for a buck a pop. That seems a little expensive to us, but if you’re struggling with a game and you want the option to have more lives or health, you can buy your way into it. And unlike in the arcade, you can now pause the games.
Anything you disliked about the original games is still a problem here. Ghouls 'N Ghosts is still difficult enough to make you scream bloody murder, and Commando would be a lot more fun if it were a dual-stick shooter. But these are direct ports, so we don't expect big changes or extra polish.
Anyone who spent much time in the loud, flashy gaming pits of yore should absolutely download Capcom Arcade. It offers a good variety of game types, with titles that will give older gamers a trip down memory lane. The pricing structure is fair, the ports are solid, and the controls work great. We're looking forward to see what new games Capcom will add, and we're hopeful that other companies will rip off this freemium compilation idea. If it works, it works. And Capcom Arcade works.

Nice work, Capcom. It may be hard to appreciate now, but the graphics and presentation in these arcade titles were astounding at the time. It'll be interesting to see if the gameplay and mechanics still hold up to modern expectations.
I can't wait to play Darkstalkers and Final Fight on Capcom Arcade!

How were the ads in the video removed? I was under the impression that they stayed there regardless if you purchased any games or not? Am I wrong?
Great app, though my memory of SFII must be warped... or of SFII: CE as I don't remember being spammed by sonic booms all the live long day!
Good, but it is obvious they will keep releasing street fighter ii until they get to super turbo. I'll be waiting to buy anything when that one comes out.
When is Capcom going to release another game on Capcom Arcade? The last game released on the app was Street Fighter 2: Turbo over six months ago. When is Capcom going to release Darkstalkers on the app?!?
Capcom, please release Captain Commando, Darkstalkers, and Mega Man: Power Battles on the app please.
It'd be interesting if this were the first time where an update made the score go DOWN. Maybe that has happened before, though. Clarification?
I'll forgive Capcom for the lack of free tokens if they release some new games on the app. There hasn't been a new game released on the app in months.
