Beautiful, varied environments to explore; original setting; movement is intuitive; combat feels good, despite its simplicity
No real sense of exploration; movement doesn’t feel fluid; too many boring fetch-quests
BackStab manages to capture much of what makes the Assassin’s Creed games so great.

If the Assassin’s Creed series took place in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe, it would look a lot BackStab. Much like how Shadow Guardian was a not-so-subtle take on the Uncharted franchise, BackStab is eerily reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed, which means there’s plenty of clambering up onto rooftops and stabbing people with swords. The formula doesn’t translate perfectly to the iPhone, but it works well enough.

As you can probably gather from the title, BackStab is a game about betrayal. Henry Blake was once a respected officer in the British Navy, but when his former friend conspires with the Spanish, he pins the whole thing on Henry. With nothing left to live for, Henry sets out to get revenge, and along the way transforms into generic video game hero #326, complete with a shaved head and a constant scowl. When he changes up his look in order to remain anonymous while being hunted by soldiers, Henry becomes indiscernible from other, similar looking heroes from games like inFamous or The Force Unleashed.

Have at you!

The plot is largely forgettable, and it takes quite a few curious twists, including an encounter with zombies that feels very out of place. But it does provide an excuse to travel to a wide range of locations, from tropical jungles and beautiful island villages to ancient temples and port-side towns.

As an Assassin’s Creed-inspired experience, BackStab puts a lot of focus on upward momentum. You can climb up walls and hop from rooftop to rooftop with ease. This process is largely automatic, as, for example, climbing a wall requires nothing more than simply running straight at it. But at the same time, the movement doesn’t feel as fluid as it should. This is largely due to the camera, which frequently gets turned around, forcing you to stop and re-adjust it on a regular basis.

Shimmy, shimmy.

The combat also feels devoid of much strategy, but at the same time is surprisingly satisfying. You rarely have to do much more than simply spam the attack button, but the easy-to-pull-off combos feel good and the one-hit-kills feel even better. You also have long-range weapons, such as pistols and bombs, but these are slow and rarely necessary, giving you little reason to use anything other than your sword for most of the game.

What BackStab really lacks (and what makes Assassin’s Creed so compelling) is a sense of freedom. The game is largely linear, with constant checkpoints that make it nearly impossible to get lost. There are some side quests to take on, and you can go hunting for treasure chests as well, but you never get the sense that you’re exploring a big open world. It doesn’t help that you’re regularly sent out on dull fetch quests, though horseback and cannon-firing sequences do help to break up the action somewhat.

As with most of Gameloft’s games, BackStab is still an impressive feat even with all of its flaws. It’s the best Assassin’s Creed-style game on a mobile device, and it offers a relatively lengthy and diverse quest to follow. It also shows that the developer is at least making attempts at creating more original games, as BackStab features an entirely different plot and setting than its inspiration.

You guys are usually pretty dang right on your reviews, but your wrong on this one. This is, FOR A FACT, a 4. How any one could think it's anything below is an idiot. Andrew, This is the best, most original, Gameloft game to date and somehow you gave it a 3. Wow.

    1. Tim_R June 24th, 2011

Original? They're outright copying Assassin's Creed, a franchise for which they've released an official iOS game.

      1. Megabite June 24th, 2011

Tim, Gameloft is a part of Ubisoft. And they made Assassins Creed. Their not copying anyone with this one. They did make Assassins creed for the iOS, but those were lame. Really lame. I've played AC, and this is not it.

        1. Tim_R June 24th, 2011

I know Gameloft is part of Ubisoft.

          1. Megabite June 24th, 2011

Then why are you saying that their copying their own game?!

            1. Tim_R June 24th, 2011

Because they are. Not much more to it than that. It's not a bad thing necessarily.

            2. Megabite June 24th, 2011

Tim, they aren't copying their own game. Just cause you can climb on the dang wall doesn't mean isn't assassins creed! According to tour logic, N.O.V.A. Is also a rip off of AC because you can kill people. Tim, it's time to just suck it up and admit your wrong.

      2. Mikale June 24th, 2011

The only thing even slightly similar to assassins creed is the climbing and fighting. The story, the characters, the setting are NOTHING like AC. I agree, it deserves 4 not a 3.

        1. zan November 17th, 2011

I can't agree here, the game is designed like AC, the way it's played, yes the climbing and the fighting, but also the look of the game, the world design, overall it's much more similar to AC than what you said, I agree with the score 3, it's a great game, but it's a remake of AC with a different twist, and story, and instead of being an assassin you are a military guy, so the score 3 is right if you ask me

    2. Tom June 25th, 2011

A review is a professional's opinion, there are no facts involved, calling someone an idiot for disagreeing with you is pretty low. Also if you really think your statement about shooting people is logically correct, that makes you pretty stupid. So quite being an ass, accept that we don't all share your opinions, and if you can't stand it go find a different source for your reviews.

      1. Megabite June 25th, 2011

Yes, but if the review is completely wrong, then I have the right to call the reviewer an idiot. Andrew isn't an idiot and that's something I know from experience. I don't know what part of his brain conjured up this review, but it probably wasn't his best.

        1. Tom June 26th, 2011

          Lol seriously,
Me: You can't call a review "wrong" it's an opinion from a professional, you can disagree, that doesn't make it "wrong."
Megabite: But if the review is wrong then I have a right to call the reviewer out.

Seriously man, did we not just cover this, the guy has his opinion, you have yours, get over it and move on. This review deserves a three for a variety of good reasons in my opinion.

    3. Crysis June 26th, 2011

I'm kinda sorry for you but this game can never reach a 4 , I've seen the review at Touchgen site , only 2.5 star only cuz of glitches and laggy , yes I agree with you this one is gameloft's original but it's not good enough to be a great hit

  2. Ben Wright June 24th, 2011

Did you guys know you can hold down the jump button to run a heck of a lot faster?

    1. AnotherFAn June 24th, 2011

yeah it tells you in the beginning...

  3. AnotherFAn June 24th, 2011

I agree, should have been a 4. This game is great! I seriously cant stop playing it. Its like a mix of Red Dead Redemption, Assassins Creed, and a tiny bit of GTA....

  4. Foood June 24th, 2011

Assassin's Creed + GTA + Red Dead Redemption + Uncharted + Tomb Raider = Backstab. It's good, but I also agree that the open-world isn't that rewarding to explore.

  5. AnotherFAn June 25th, 2011

Yeah there are some gameplay mechanics that are similar between AC and Backstab (wall climbing, assassination) but other than that its really just a combination of other games into a single, somewhat orignial game.
Oh yeah, and if youj are done/ 78% done with the game, can you help me?

    SPOILER ALERT:

So when you finish the revolution in Cuciba and when Sadiq gets away, what do you do then? There's an exit right next to me after you finsih talking with Jaragua, but it wont let me through. What do you do???

    1. Ruben December 22nd, 2011

Im stuck in e same point as u.Im lost at that 78%.could you update me if you find a solution.Thanks..

  6. satrianifanX10 June 27th, 2011

I agree with Tim_R it might not a straight out copy but its definitely inspired by it. and this is not even close to the best gameloft game...and this is a review for yout to look at and decide if u want to buy the game not start fighting with the reviewer its his opinion and according to me they gave it it's perfect rating..3.

  7. Faizan July 1st, 2011

I do not think I was playing the same game as the review.... I have been playing it all day and it has been awesome! not the buggy mess they are talking about... cool game overall and definitely set a new standard for what mobile gaming can do.
