Its release on iPhone only recently confirmed, Sega already appears to be going the extra mile with Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Sega has revealed that the version that hits the App Store later this year will come with two extra levels.
As you might expect, these stages will make use of iPhone’s accelerometer. One of the zones rumored to be included in iPhone’s extra ensemble is the Lost Labyrinth zone, a video of which recently hit the net.
The Lost Labyrinth zone requires players to use the accelerometer to tip a mine cart, although its debut online has been met with a somewhat critical response. As Gamer Limit (the site that broke the video) attests, the stage’s current design seems to work against the smooth play Sonic has made its signature, with pacing thrown out of the window as the cart appears to hit an invisible wall or two.
Nonetheless, the fact that Sega deems the iPhone worthy of its own levels, rather than a mere port of the version set to hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii at the same time, is a testament to the faith the publisher has in the format. Let’s just hope that faith translates into some equally faithful and exclusive gameplay.
