Good news is, quite often, quickly followed by bad. While Sega has finally revealed that, as rumored, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is in development for iPhone as well as Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it’s also sadly confirmed that the 2D platformer has been hit by a delay.
Just how long it will now take before we see it hit the App Store is still up in the air, but its official release date is now listed as ‘late 2010’, with Sega Europe revealing that the development team needs the extra time to make sure it’s up to scratch.
‘Sega is incredibly happy at the overwhelmingly positive response to Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode I from both press and fans around the world, and wants to ensure that we’re delivering the best Sonic experience possible,’ the company said on its blog.
‘With this dedication to quality and the Sonic experience in mind, Sega has decided to extend the development of the game, and will now release Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode I in the latter half of 2010.
‘The additional time will allow the Development Team to focus on ensuring overall high-quality throughout the game by continuing to tune, balance, and maintain the kind of polish that an important title like this demands, and ultimately providing fans with an unrivalled classic Sonic feel.’
In short, that’s typical PR speak for “it’s not quite ready yet.” Still, with its iPhone release now confirmed, at least we know Sonic will be hitting everyone’s favorite mobile device sooner rather than later.
