You may not be able to tell by the title, but Robokill – Rescue Titan Prime is not one of those happy, hand-holding games for the meek and mild. This is a game where robots kill other robots, with mechanical precision and no sappy human emotions like mercy or forgiveness to get in the way. If you want to turn your iPad into a murder machine, Robokill is a fantastic choice.
Robokill is a twin-stick shooter that takes place on a spaceship loaded with hostile mechano-men. You control a walking mech with four weapon slots and four upgrade slots. These eight blank boxes let you create a wild variety of play types, like a laser-blasting marksman who gets lucky cash drops, or a close-combat shotgun surgeon who explodes when your health gets low.
Error! Error! Does not compute.
On each of 13 levels, you have to move from room to room, clearing them of bogies before the doors open and you can move on. Random drops of loot, from cash to weapons and upgrades, will fall out of your defeated enemies like candy from a piñata. They even leave an attractive crater when you blow them up.
Robokill’s greatest asset, besides the hilarious name, is its expert pacing. You’ll level up and collect cash at a consistent rate, unlocking new weapons along the way. Every level offers new goodies to buy in the shop, and the enemies always seem to keep pace with your abilities.
Most people would call those rooms, not levels.
Robokill’s biggest problem, however, is its high asking price. On the iPad, it costs $7.99, and you can demo the Flash game online here or try out the lite version before committing. A lack of extra modes hurts the replay value, but it’s still fun to go back and try out different combinations of weapons. Also, the iPad version runs in a window, and we’d prefer the option to play Robokill in full-screen mode.
If the price comes down, or if you’re an iPad-owning adrenaline junkie, don’t think twice before picking up Robokill. We loved this expertly-crafted shoot ’em up, even if its steely, robotic heart is incapable of loving us back.
