Zombieville USA Review

If the rash of zombie movies over the last decade or so has taught us anything, it’s that the zombie apocalypse is a very real threat to the American way of life. Well, maybe not quite, but Mika Mobile tries its best to remind us of the threat with its version of a public service announcement in Zombieville USA.

It’s a simple premise. A man’s town is overrun by zombies, and by the power of the second amendment, it is his duty to defend it ‘” or at least survive until the ammo runs out. You’ve got to believe that the NRA is hoping for some kind of zombie outbreak, if only to boost membership.

Gameplay is about as simple as it gets. As a side-scrolling shooter, it’s see zombie, shoot zombie. One thumb moves right, the other shoots. Rinse, repeat. Along the way, there are houses you can hide in with ammo and money, which you can spend at the weapon store at the end of each level.

It’s hardly innovative, and it’s a formula that’s as old as video games themselves. Unfortunately, that doesn’t leave players with any surprises along the way, which is a real shame because there’s really only one thing to do in this game. If there is a surprise, it’s the complete lack of sound coming from the zombies except for the satisfying “SPLAT!” when their heads explode. Can’t a brother get a simple groan? … “BRAAAAAAINS.”

Sure, the developers tried to dress things up with a few different guns, and the cell-shaded graphics are pretty to look at, but that’s all it is ‘” eye candy.

At the end of the day, much like the zombie genre itself, Zombieville USA is just another tired B-list entry in an already crowded field.
