Zentomino Review

If you’re a fan of low-key puzzle games without explosions or time limits– games like Zen Bound and PathPix Pro– then you should definitely play Zentomino. This game actually came out a while ago, but its most recent update (which introduced Game Center achievements) is what made us check it out. And we’re glad we did.

Each level presents you with a shape that you must fill in using some or all of the 12 Tetris-like pieces placed along the sides of the screen. You can rotate or flip the pieces, but you must fill in the entire shape without overlapping. That’s all there is to it.

A blank slate.

There’s no time limit, so you never feel pressured to think fast or blaze through the game. In fact, soothing music plays in the background, so you might be able to zone out while you play (provided, of course, that you’re capable of complex spatial thinking while zoned out). The controls are extremely intuitive and responsive as well.

The game comes a jaw-dropping 216 puzzles of varying difficulty, all of which are immediately accessible the moment you boot up the game. Are you breezing through the early stages? Jump to later ones. Want to play a level shaped like a dog? Go ahead.

Tetris, you’ve changed, man.

Because there are so many options– 12 pieces that can be rotated, flipped, and rotated again– the levels can get brain-strainingly difficult. Luckily, if you lay down a few pieces in one puzzle and get stumped, you can leave that puzzle to work on others. When you come back, you’ll find your pieces right where you left them. If you’re hopelessly stuck, you can use the hint system to nudge you along the right track.

Zentomino has a simple but addictive play mechanic and tons of content (with more coming in every update). Whether you’re looking for a puzzle game you can dabble in here and there, or one you can sink hours of time into in one sitting, Zentomino has you covered.
