WarCorps: Genesis Review

If you’ve been playing the recently released Tiny Troopers (and you really should be playing it) then you may have stopped to wonder what it would be like to play the game from a different perspective. While it may not exactly be a third-person shooter version of that game, WarCorps: Genesis from Triniti Interactive takes you deep into the action on the post-apocalyptic battlefront against another group of would-be terrorists.

In WarCorps you play as a member of the elite covert-action team, the HellHawks. You fight against two evil warring factions the RADS and the Fatwas and it’s your job to stop them from carrying out their nefarious plans for world domination.

If you’ve played a shooter on iOS, especially Dead Trigger, then you likely already know what you’re getting yourself into. There are 60 missions spread over four different areas, and missions range from gathering supplies, killing a certain number of enemies or surviving against an enemy onslaught for a certain amount of time. Strewn throughout the levels you can find medals for experience points, which allow you to unlock more powerful weapons and items, and money for buying those things in the shop.

And that’s all there really is too it. You basically just run around the same areas killing enemies, collecting things, leveling up and moving on. Wash, rinse and repeat. The game is fun for a while, but you eventually reach that point where you’re wondering why you keep doing the same thing over and over again. The only real variation is in the enemies’ difficulty. They do get harder to kill and they also get smarter and more cunning as the game goes on. In the early stages of the game a grunt carrying a rocket-launcher will probably just stand in front of you and shoot. Later on that same soldier may fire once, take cover and then run around to flank you from the side. The battles really do get pretty intense and exciting if you stick with it.

Adding to the games lack of variety is the fact that unless you’re willing to plunk down some more money, you’ll be playing with the same soldier and a very limited number of weapons and items throughout the game. There are four different soldier classes and a large amount of guns and armor and enhancements available to you, but they can only be unlocked via IAPs.

One of the most crucial aspects of any shooter are the controls, and in WarCorps they work reasonably well. You’ve seen this setup before too. Your movement stick is on one side, your firing button is on the other and you swipe an icon in the top corner to change weapons and reload. We would have liked the firing button to be a bit larger or to have the option to reposition it, as we regularly kept missing it. Also, the aiming seems to be a little off. There were times when enemies would be right in front of our soldier and our bullets would whiz right past them. That being said, we never got to a point where we felt like we were failing because of the controls.

WarCorps: Genesis is a fairly fun game. It has nice graphics and sound-effects and in later stages the battles can get pretty intense. But there really isn’t much here we haven’t seen before and the repetitive nature mixed with the annoying microtransaction aspect really keep the game from standing out. It’s good, just not great.
