VS. Racing 2 Review

With endlessly customizable touchscreen controls, iOS games can sometimes become more complicated than they need to be. Some games obscure the screen with buttons and menus, making it difficult to see the game you’re supposed to be playing. VS. Racing 2 doesn’t have this problem. Not in the least.

VS. Racing 2 is a simplified racing game. It gives you a top-down view of the race track, so you can see your car along with your fellow racers. If you are playing on an iPad, you can also see the majority of your track. To make the game even simpler, most of the time there is only one ‘button’ on the entire screen.

A bird’s eye view.

The controls are so basic, you might thing that it couldn’t possibly work. On the bottom of your screen, you will see a small steering wheel and an arrow. The arrow points in whatever direction your car is facing. Simply by pressing on the steering wheel, your car accelerates. To steer, you rotate your thumb to move the arrow in the direction you want to turn. To brake, you let go of the wheel.

VS. Racing 2 also isn’t complicated with power-ups or different types of vehicles. You will always be racing other cars, not mopeds or monster trucks. There are secret levels you can unlock, which feature oil slicks and speed boosts, but these are outside of the normal levels.

The winding road.

While all of this might sound boring or too simple, it never feels that way. The game plays like a retro arcade racer, with a focus on the actual racing. You can earn coins by passing other cars or grinding against them, and these coins can be used to ‘pimp your car’ with better acceleration, off-roading, or top speed stats. Of course, if you don’t have the patience or the skill to earn these coins the old-fashioned way, you can always buy them with good old cash.

For those looking to challenge other players, the game offers a local multiplayer feature, so you can play with nearby friends over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. You can also play at your own pace by sending friends your ghosts, or recordings of your best time on a track. Your friend can then try to race against your ghost to see who is the best.

VS. Racing 2 may not feature intense customization or battle racing, but it does live up to its title. It’s a racing game with a simple control scheme makes you focus on driving and nothing else.
