Robot Unicorn Attack Christmas Edition Review

There’s no stopping the robot unicorn. So far we’ve had the original game, an HD iPad version, and a heavy metal edition. Now the game has been re-released with a sprinkling of snow, a glazing of ice, and an awesomely ridiculous new song. Sure, it’s the same old game we’ve played before, but it feels new.

If you haven’t played Robot Unicorn Attack yet, here’s the deal: You play as a robot unicorn that runs forward automatically at an ever increasing speed. All you have to do is jump over pits, dash through obstacles, and avoid nosediving into rocks to stay alive. Along the way, you can pick up collectibles for extra points. Game Center handles the leaderboards and achievements, and whoever dies with the highest score wins.

On Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer, on… Robot Unicorn?

So what’s new in this version? The music, for one. Your gaming session is accompanied by the song ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End)’, by The Darkness, which you can listen to below. Whether you like that song over Erasure’s “Always” from the original game, or Blind Guardian’s “Battlefield” from the Heavy Metal edition, is a matter of taste. For our money, the Christmas song is among the best, and we give massive kudos to The Darkness for being one of the proud few bands to have a song used in this esteemed series.

The graphics are new, too, and they look phenomenal (though not Retina optimized). This time there’s a coating of snow over everything, with Christmas lights strung up and peppermint candies hung on the sides of the platforms. Our unicorn hero even has a pair of reindeer antlers strapped to his head. The collectibles now appear as wrapped gifts, and the barriers you have to dash through are giant snow crystals.

And call us crazy, but this game did more to put us in the Christmas spirit than any amount of holiday shopping ever could. Sure, the gameplay is the same as in the previous editions, but honest-to-goodness Christmas cheer seeps out of this game’s every pore. If that doesn’t appeal to you, then you just might be Ebenezer Scrooge.
