Riptide GP2 Review

Riptide GP2 doesn’t necessarily feel all that different from other racing games for iOS. The game uses your device’s accelerometer to steer your craft, which means you will tilt your device like a steering wheel to steer. Your brakes are just onscreen buttons, and you have access to a boost to help get you in the lead.

The keep you in the lead, you’ll need to do tricks off of the ramps scattered throughout each track. Tricks are accomplished by swiping both of your thumbs in virtually any direction on the device at the same time, creating aerial feats of artistry. You have to be careful, though. If you hit a wall or any boundary while in mid-trick, your racer will be tossed off his craft like a rag doll.

The modes of racing do vary and begin to show the game’s unique style. In the career mode, some tracks will feature the basic format. Be in the top three to complete the race, and you’ll earn stars. Stars unlock the next track. On other tracks you’ll race by yourself, trying to get the best time possible, or you’ll have to pass an elimination round, where the racer in last place is eliminated every fifteen seconds.

The real appeal of Riptide GP2 is the futuristic environment and all that comes with it. The tracks themselves are intriguing to look at. Each one is filled with mysterious turbines and machinery, giving you a glimpse into this new world. Apparently, in this future, the next generation of racing is on the water with watercraft nearly resembling rockets.

To make this racing utopia shine on your device, Riptide GP2 uses some pretty great graphics. Despite that, it does run on a majority of the iOS devices currently being used, so you won’t be left out if you don’t have the latest and greatest.

The game also shines when it comes to its new career mode, added since the previous Riptide game. The career mode will force you to excel at the previous tracks before you can move forward, but it also earns you experience points. Experience points can be spent to unlock additional abilities or tricks for your racer. You can also earn in-game money to buy or upgrade your craft.

Racing games can often have a difficult time standing out in the crowd, but Riptide GP2 does it well. Since it features a world set in the future, the game is visually striking and interesting. Its career mode is enticing enough to keep you playing for hours, hoping to unlock that next watercraft or trick. Once you feel confidant, you can also take your skills online with the multiplayer feature. Riptide GP2 is a weird world worth exploring.
