Ragdoll Blaster 2 cannonballed onto the iPhone earlier this year, and we loved just about everything about it. Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD, the new iPad version of the game, isn’t a huge jump forward for the franchise, but it certainly went through more than just a graphical upsizing in its transition to the iPad.
The set-up is incredibly simple. Each level contains, in addition to obstacles, a cannon loaded with unlimited ragdolls and a target. All you have to do is hit the target with a ragdoll. The fewer ragdolls it takes to hit the target the better. The reason this game reaches unbridled levels of fun is because of its tightly honed physics and its wonderfully creative level designs.
Rube Goldberg, welcome to the iPad.
If you’ve bumped around in the real world for a while, you’ll feel right at home in Ragdoll Blaster 2 HD. Your ragdolls have just the right amount of heft and weight, so they sail through the air and interact with movable objects exactly as you’d expect. It takes several ragdoll blasts to move a large metal sphere, for instance, but pieces of wood can be scooted much more easily, particularly if they’re on ice. This all sounds obvious, but rarely do a game’s physics feel this true-to-life.
And with over 200 levels in the game, you’d think the creative well would dry up quickly, but the developers have managed to implement fresh gameplay ideas from start to finish. You’ll be flipping switches, using portals, knocking over structures Angry Birds-style, and hitting moving targets– and that’s just the beginning. True, most of the levels are from the iPhone version of the game, but 30 iPad-exclusive ones have been added, and the extra screen space has been thoughtfully used.
Let there be light.
Still, the game would benefit from some more exclusive iPad content and perhaps a level editor like the one found in Labyrinth 2 HD. If you’ve already purchased the iPhone version, then buying this one for the 30 exclusive levels probably isn’t worth your while. But if you’re new to the series, by all means pick this game up. It’s a blast.
