One Epic Game Review

You might be thinking to yourself, ‘I need another auto-runner like I need a compound fracture in my leg.’ But if you have room in your heart (and space on your iOS device) for one more endless running game, One Epic Game is the one to get. It doesn’t bring anything especially new to the genre, but it repackages the best ideas from existing auto-runners and adds a layer of humor that’s silly enough to lift anyone’s spirits.

The brief cutscenes between levels break the fourth wall, so the characters are aware that they’re in a game, and they comment on the absurdity of the things they’re asking you to do. Most of the game is set in a post-apocalyptic world full of both aliens and zombies, but for a while you’re transported back to World War II, where you get to fight against the axis powers. It’s a hilarious, goof-ball story, and we recommend reading every word of it.

It’s a long way down.

The game plays a lot like Monster Dash, so your character runs forward automatically, leaving you to jump and shoot by tapping either side of the screen. Along the way you’ll pick up a variety of weapons, like a machine gun, shotgun, missile launcher, and laser. In the story mode, you have to achieve a different goal to beat each level, like avoiding taking damage for a certain distance, reaching a particular score, or killing enemies only by jumping on their heads.

As expected, there’s also an endless mode that lets you keep playing until you lose all of your health or fall into a pit. Like the campaign mode, however, it has checkpoints every 1,000 feet, so climbing the leaderboards is more a measure of the amount of time you’re willing to put into the game than it is a measure of your mad skills. But that’s not a deal-breaker.

And that’s it. There’s nothing epic here in the least, but the music is thumping and the game has a light, joyful quality, despite the sizable challenge it packs. Probably no auto-runner is going to blow your mind at this point, so you might as well manage your expectations, kick back, get a few laughs, and have some fun with One Epic Game.
