Knight Attack Review

Knight Attack contains one level, and your character sprints through it automatically. To keep him alive, you have to jump or double-jump over pits, and dash through barrier obstacles. Along the way you can collect score multiplier power-ups. The goal is to die with the highest score. Sound familiar?

If you’ve played an endless running game like Canabalt or Monster Dash it will sound familiar, but the game it’s most similar to– nearly identical to, in fact– is Robot Unicorn Attack. The only thing missing is the delightfully absurd concept and the impossibly apt music.

Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?

Knight Attack brings one thing and one thing only to the table: a medieval setting. Instead of a mechanical unicorn, you control a knight. Instead of collecting fairies, you collect clouds of light. Gameplay-wise, it’s exactly the same: you run, jump, and dash. The onscreen buttons are as responsive as they need to be, the presentation is acceptable. High scores are tracked by Game Center.

Sure, Knight Attack is a solid game, but in a world with Robot Unicorn Attack (particularly the Heavy Metal Edition, which features a similar setting), there’s no good reason for it to exist. Knight Attack is generic; everything it does has already been done before, and better.

Granted, Robot Unicorn Attack wasn’t the first (or tenth) game of its kind. But it has an off-the-wall absurdity that makes it impossible to resist. Knight Attack lacks any similar gimmick– it’s like a watered-down version of the original. Buy Knight Attack if you must, but wouldn’t you rather play something special?
