Dude Perfect Review

Clearly, Dude Perfect is geared toward younger kids. The title is obnoxious, the characters are drawn in a super-cartoony art style, and there’s not even a hint of violence anywhere to be found. For gamers used to causing explosive mayhem, it might seem just a little too family friendly.

Dude Perfect is a basketball trick shot game. The goal of each level is to make a basket, while picking up enough points to move on to the next stage. Your character stands rooted in place, and you use an Angry Birds-like swipe to determine the strength and trajectory of your shot. The more the ball bounces before dropping into the hoop, the more points you get. Of course, if you miss the shot, you don’t get any points at all.

Cue the Jaws theme music.

The control input isn’t the only similarity between Dude Perfect and Angry Birds. Based on your score, you’re also granted up to three stars for your performance on each level. Also, in both games luck plays a large role in your success.

The reason luck is such a key factor is that the levels are peppered with all kinds of stuff that you have to work around. Between your character and the hoop, you’ll find obstacles like houses, cars, telephone poles, and even clouds and space ships that will send your ball ricocheting off in other directions. Each time the ball bounces, you rack up extra points.

It’s a long shot, but it looks good.

However, to pass a level, you always need to get more points than you’re awarded simply for making the shot. This means you have to bounce the ball on all kinds of uneven terrain before sinking the shot, something that’s very tough to predict. This is where the luck comes in, which makes the game more annoying than it probably should be.

Another problem with all this extra bouncing is that when you miss a shot, you have to wait until the ball comes to a stop before you can try again. This wouldn’t be an issue if you could tap the screen to skip ahead once you’ve determined that you have no chance of making the shot. But instead, plan on a lot of waiting.

Dude Perfect is actually a real group of guys who go around making crazy basketball shots, praising Jesus, and raising money for charities. If you’re so inclined, you can watch videos of their trick shots on their website. But as a game, Dude Perfect is decent, but nowhere near perfect. If you’re in the mood for physics-based gameplay, you’re better off sticking with Angry Birds.
