Cheap Shot: Urban Kick Academy

Touchdown! At this academy, you’re not just taught to play football, you are the football! In Urban Kick Academy, a distance game like Johnny Crash, the goal is to jolt a kid dressed in sports garb, sending him flying through the air across a city until he crashes. It’s a simple concept, but this is a game that you will not want to keep on the bench.

Gameplay couldn’t be easier. You simply set an arrow in the direction you want the kid to go, choose the amount of power, and off he goes, soaring through the air. But as they say, what goes up must come down, so that’s why you’ve stacked up on nutritious (and bean-stuffed) chicken. As you fly, you can let loose farts to help propel him higher, giving you some extended control.

Oh, real mature.

One of the most appealing aspects of the game is the fact that there are tons of obstacles to smash into. For example, a kite will keep you suspended in air, while bombs slow you down. There are also floating chickens that restock your fart meter. Oh, and lets not forget the floating space penguins! Ragdoll physics also come into play with these obstacles. Depending on how you hit them, you may find yourself recovering from a near-death collapse or taking a plunge.

At the end of each run, you can view your statistics, post to Facebook, or submit your score online. The lack of any local high-score list makes this feature feel incomplete, though.

Urban Kick Academy was a surprisingly likable game for us, and at the low entry price of $0.99 it is one that those looking for a fun time-waster should definitely pick up.

Editor’s Note: Cheap Shot is a new review feature where we pick a game that costs $.99 or $1.99 and give it the quick review treatment. While you won’t find a 1-4 score or our usual pros and cons, you will get a direct assessment of the game based on a one-hour playthrough. You’ll still find our full-length, regular reviews for other games.
