Catch the Ark Review

Most people know the Bible’s version of the story of Noah’s Ark, but Catch the Ark tells the tale from a different perspective. You control three animals that were left behind. But instead of resigning themselves to perish in the flood, they hop on a raft and chase after the lucky ones.

They’re doomed, of course, because this is a high-score game. Like how Temple Run is an endless running game and Super Mole Escape is an endless carting game, Catch the Ark is an endless rafting game. You don’t have a prayer of catching the raft, so the question is how long you can last before you perish from the earth.

You have a T-Rex?

From the moment you begin, it’s clear that the makers of Catch the Ark were inspired by games like Temple Run. Unfortunately, that’s where the inspiration stopped. In this game, all you can do is move the raft left and right to dodge obstacles like alligators, rocks, and sharks. Occasionally you’ll come near Noah’s ark, but he drops exploding barrels in your path. You can pick up or buy the usual power-ups like coin magnets and temporary invincibility, but you’ve probably seen it all before.

The level is procedurally generated, but when you only encounter a dozen or so obstacles, the proceedings quickly grow stale. Like Tiny Wings and Jetpack Joyride, the game always assigns you three achievements to strive for, but they’re not interesting enough to hold your attention for long.

Does Catch the Ark provide a decently enjoyable experience? Yes. Will it keep you coming back after 15 minutes? Probably not. In this day and age, it takes more than eye-catching graphics to make an endless runner (or “endless rafter”) worth your buck.
