Billy the Painter Review

Billy the Painter isn’t the most complex game you’ll ever play. It isnt packed with bonus features or tons of unlockable content. It is, however, a simple game with a unique, artistic look. It’s a clever little puzzler that will force you to play again and again for that elusive high score. Best of all, it’s something we haven’t seen before.

Billy the Painter takes place in a warehouse somewhere around the 1930s. Your job is to paint the warehouse floor. The trick is, certain parts of the floor have already been painted, and Billy doesn’t want to paint the same spot twice.

The controls are simple. With a single tap, you drop a spot of paint that will grow. Once that paint expands and touches the previously painted areas, the level is over. Each level has a goal to meet regarding how much of the floor is to be covered in paint. If you fail to meet or exceed that goal, you will move on but you will also lose one of your three lives.

More fun than watching paint dry.

The area for you to paint is made up of several perfect circles, so the trick is to drop the paint perfectly in the middle of each circle. You will also need to time each drop. Smaller areas will need to be taken care of last in order to give the larger areas more time.

You gain bonus points for any spots of old, blue paint that you cover up. This is a strategy game that requires a precise touch and perfect timing. Once you’re out of lives, it’s game over. The goal is to get the highest score and play more levels than you have before.

The art style of the game is notable. Billy looks like a character from Steamboat Willy, with monochromatic attire and cartoony black eyes. The levels themselves are delightfully simple, letting the paint be the focus of the level.

At first, you might think that Billy the Painter would get boring, but it’s surprising how addictive the game can be. There is always that subconscious goal to paint 100% of the floor, and it might just keep you playing longer than you’d expect.

This is a great mobile game to share with your friends, to battle it out for the highest points. It’s a shame that the game doesn’t include Game Center integration or online leaderboards. Even without them, though, this is still a fun, one-of-a-kind game with a great art style.
