Amazing Charlie is the sort of game about clowns that works for both fans of the painted circus folks and those who just find them creepy. On the one hand, you play as a clown, but on the other, you’re shooting the poor bugger out of cannons. A simple game of drawing lines to connect from one cannon to another, Amazing Charlie has you try to shoot Charlie from every cannon on the screen before time runs out.
Amazing Charlie isn’t a particularly complicated game, but it is oddly entertaining. For the most part, the game board is just an array of cannons with static animals for obstacles. Since Charlie can’t shoot through animals, you’ll have to actively map out a route to touch all the cannons without reusing any cannons or touching the animal.
The animals have escaped their cages.
You work these paths out in real time. As soon as Charlie starts, a timer runs down before the cannon explodes. The timer renews every time he hits another cannon, so you’ll have to quickly choose the next cannon by drawing a line from the current cannon to the next. As an added bonus, whenever you cross a previously drawn line a hoop appears in your path. Flying through these hoops leads to extra points.
Anytime you reach a dead end or run out of time, Charlie loses one of his three lives, though sometimes you’re tasked with completing an array of levels without losing any lives. Basically, Amazing Charlie is connect-the-dots with a bang. It’s fun and the game adds some bits of variety as you progress through the 63 levels. There are even levels with Charlie’s Uncle Bobo that actually focus on knocking out the animals, which is a nice change of pace.
While there are plenty of levels and challenge, the game does tend to suffer from repetition. This is perhaps unavoidable in any puzzle-style game and not a huge complaint since the game’s only a buck, but Charlie doesn’t have quite the staying power of the big guns like Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja. Just the same, the game is definitely worth the purchase price if you’re in the mood for something new.
