3D Brick Breaker Revolution 2 Review

Breakout clones are plentiful in the App Store, but occasionally one comes along that freshens up the experience. 3D Brick Breaker Revolution 2 does this to enough of an extent that we can recommend fans of the genre give it a shot.

The gameplay is identical to that of most Breakout games: Use a paddle to keep the ball in motion and break all the bricks to advance onward. You also have your general slew of powerups, including lasers, multiball, magnet paddle, and so on. We were a bit disappointed that these were so ordinary.

The shocker.

However, 3D Brick Breaker Revolution 2 shines in its neon aesthetic. The powerup visual effects, explosions, and glassy textures all jump off the screen. One smaller detail that really impressed us was that the tiles popped up when the ball ran over them. Complementing this is a thumping electronic soundtrack.

Two gameplay modes are available: classic and revolution. Classic is a general level-progression game where you battle your way through 99 predetermined levels. After every 20 levels you face a boss. Revolution is a mixture of bosses and an infinite number of randomized levels, essentially a survival mode that will keep you coming back. The lack of online leaderboards is disappointing, but we didn’t find that the omission of that feature hurt our enjoyment.

Twist and shout.

The boss battles offer a challenging diversion from normal levels. While still comprised of brick formations, they move quickly, throw tons of power-downs at you, and drop the blocks you hit back at your paddle, causing you to lose a life if they hit.

A problem most Breakout games suffer from is anger-inducing controls, but 3D Brick Breaker Revolution 2 works great. At any time, you can switch between touch buttons or sliding your thumb to move the paddle, the latter being our preferred choice as it felt the most natural. You can activate one of up to four stored powerups by tapping on them along the sides of the screen. This placement wasn’t ideal, but worked well enough.

3D Brick Breaker Revolution is a lot of fun if you like Breakout-style games. It’s a nice spin on the repetitive-by-nature style of the genre, and it looks pretty amazing too.
