Undead: The Last Refuge Hands-On Preview

iPhone gamers love options. After all, there are tens of thousands of them competing for the dollars in your games budget. With that in mind, Bulkypix and Magic Pockets have an offer for you: Take Call of Duty: World At War: Zombies, subtract about six or seven dollars from the price tag, add more zombies, OpenFeint high scores, and bring the setting up to modern times. It may not have online multiplayer, but that still sounds like a good deal to us.

We had a chance to play Undead: The Last Refuge at GDC today, and came away feeling very impressed. While CoD: Zombies might feel a bit hefty and sluggish, Undead is very light and sleek. All the same gameplay elements are there: you’re barricaded in a house with zombies prying at the windows to get in, and you earn bucks for killing them, which can be used to unlock new parts of the house.

Three weapons are available to you as you progress: a pistol, shotgun, and machine gun. Opening different parts of the house gives you access to more guns, but it also leaves you vulnerable to more avenues of attack. Take just two hits in a row, and you’ll go down.

We especially liked the zombie combat in this game. Zombies react to being shot in different parts of the body, and headshots net you extra cash. Potentially, Undead’s engine is capable of rendering up to 32 shambling zombies at once, but you’d have to play like a pacifist for a long time to get that many in your house at once.

As a single-player game, we think that Undead has the potential to be just as good as CoD: Zombies. We had a lot of fun in this ‘Night of the Living Dead’-style setting, and only wish there were more environments or weapons to use. Additional updates have been promised, but only if the game is successful. Judging by what we played, we think there’s a good chance of that. Undead will be available later this month.
