In a sure sign that iPhone gaming has gone drastically mainstream, Entertainment Weekly of all places broke the news that Rock Band is coming to the iPhone. It may not come with a plastic guitar or drum set, but this iPhone version aims to recreate the same feeling as the console versions with two to four player Bluetooth multiplayer and a song list of 20 hits.

Besides the standard Facebook integration to get the band together, Rock Band will let you receive push notifications for band invites. Of course, we’re still a bit puzzled as to how this will work. Multiplayer is local only, so we don’t see the advantage yet of coordinating band practice through the game itself.
Also, while we’ve played drums and guitar/bass in rhythm games before, Rock Band for iPhone has surprised us with the integration of vocal parts as well. Unfortunately, instead of singing into the iPhone’s microphone, you’ll just be tapping along with scrolling words instead of notes.
Rock Band is due out very soon– this month, in fact, according to EA Mobile. Whether it can compete with the Tap Tap series is yet to be seen, but with a solid setlist to start and downloadable tracks to buy, this could be some considerable musical competition. Plus, the brand-name recognition won’t hurt, either.
