Mr. Bill Hands-On Preview

Capcom just sent word that a flying game based on the 1970s Saturday Night Live claymation character Mr. Bill will be released on the App Store very soon.

Like in the flying games A Doodle Fly and Fly Kiwi Fly, your goal is to keep Mr. Bill aloft as long and far as possible. The game’s main campaign includes a set of circus-themed levels and a set of farm levels.

You start each circus level by being fired out of a cannon, and must flap your arms by pressing down on the screen. Food will give you more energy to fly farther, and you can also land on trained seals and clowns on unicycles to get an extra boost. The farm levels are similar, but with birds to move you ahead and a giant horseshoe slingshot instead of a cannon at the start.

We had a chance to play the final version of Mr. Bill, and while we question whether anyone under 40 has fond memories of the character, it seems like a decent little flying game. The controls are very responsive, and early levels seem to be accommodating to new players. There’s also an endless level for each theme, but online high scores are not included.

Mr. Bill will also receive an update in time for Halloween, which will feature the ubiquitous App Store zombies. For a buck, we can see this being a pretty good buy, although we don’t expect Mr. Bill to have a lot of name recognition these days. Look for Mr. Bill on the App Store soon.
