Hands-On with Upcoming Games from Crescent Moon and Forest Moon

We’ve already previewed Exiles: Far Colony and Siegecraft TD, but Crescent Moon/Forest Moon also showed us a number of other games they’re publishing in the coming months. Read on for the goods.

Dig

dig-1

In Dig, you control an archeologist digging up ancient treasures on job sites. You control him by swiping, which sends him off along straight lines. Enclose an area with your lines, and all the treasures hidden in that area are revealed. Enemies like mummies, gnomes, and jellies are always on your tail, but you can purchase power-ups to make the dig go smoothly. Look for Dig on the App Store in the coming weeks.

Dragon Blast

Dragon Blast is a physics puzzler that looks at first glance like Angry Birds with dragons. But it’s actually more like Fragger. You control a dragon on the left side of the screen, and the goal is to defeat all the humans on the right. To do that, you set how high the dragon should hover, then aim and unleash fireballs at the enemies and the environment. The levels we played took place in a medieval castle environment, but other levels include a Viking theme and an ancient Rome theme. The game will be free-to-play, with levels unlocking as you earn (or purchase) stars.

Monkey Boxing

Here’s a silly game. Monkey Boxing is basically like Rock’em Sock’em Robots, but with monkeys. You and a friend each control a monkey in a boxing ring. The only controls are block and attack buttons, so it’s easy to pick up and play. Periodically quick-time events occur, and the person to handle them fastest get a leg up. It’s a funny, engaging game that would be perfectly suited to bring out at parties after everyone has tossed back a few. Monkey Boxing releases in a few weeks.

Paper Monsters 2

The original Paper Monsters was a great little side-scrolling platformer, and the sequel looks to expand on that. Picking up right where the original left off, Paper Monsters 2 takes place in outer space. This time around, the game pulls inspiration from Metroid, with a ball-rolling mechanic and a little more focus on exploration. There’s even a moon buggy you can drive around in. Paper Monsters 2 is coming later this year.

Tiny Miner

tiny-miner-1acde

Tiny Miner is a a fairly standard Match-3 game, so you’ll do things like slide tiles around on a grid to get three in a row. The game has a lot of personality in its art and animations, and a number of extra twists you might not have seen before. For instance, when you match up three mine carts, they go barreling off to the side, taking out all blocks in their way. You can also use a power-up to inflate a mushroom until it explodes. Tiny Miner is also free-to-play, and should hit the App Store in June or July.
