Hands-On With The Next Eliminate

Some gamers like to play God, others like to raise dogs. For those who like to shoot at other players online, there’s Eliminate Pro, but a new Ngmoco freemium game takes the same concept and sets it in the present day.

The next Eliminate (which was called “Weapons Free” when we played it, but the name isn’t final yet) is a shooter set in the present. It’s all about gaining rank, and you can queue up missions that can take anywhere from a minute to an hour to deploy. If you’re impatient, though, you can spend a little real-world money to make those missions deploy instantaneously.

Like Team Fortress 2, the game offers different weapons classes like sub machine guns, light machine guns, snipers, shotguns, and assault rifle specializations.

After each round, you’ll receive XP based on how well you perform, as well as credits and a squad bonus. There are about 28 different missions, which will be split into team deathmatch and free-for-all.

We played a six-player free-for-all (the max number of players allowed in the game), and we found it to be just as fun as Eliminate. A nice addition is that you can toss grenades, or hold them for a few seconds to “cook” them for a faster detonation.

We’ve seen the modern setting before, like levels set in a jungle, desert, warehouse, or snowy environments. But the combination of short bursts of deathmatch playable over the 3G network and constant upgrades (much like in Eliminate) give this new game an undeniable appeal.

It’s hard to say at this point what improvements over Eliminate this sequel will offer other than a modern-day setting, but we consider the last Ngmoco shooter to be so successful that we’ll gladly accept more of the same. And provided that queuing up missions in advance isn’t too burdensome, this shooter could stay free for a while. Look forward to this one hitting the App Store later this year.
