Ghosts ‘N Goblins: Gold Knights II Hands-On Preview

Upon visiting Capcom’s booth today, we were greeted with a few new treats that are coming soon to iPhones everywhere, one of which is Ghosts ‘N Goblins: Gold Knights 2. That’s right, Arthur and his battle against the undead didn’t stop with the original. Granted, what we saw of the sequel was an early alpha build, but fans of the classic action-platform game have reason to be optimistic.

Two playable characters are selectable at the start of the game, Arthur and Perceval. This isn’t a simple case of swapping of art assets, though– these guys use different weapons. Environments are very dark, with enemies frequently shifting into view from the background. Playing the game took us down memory lane, to simpler times of fighting off impossible odds (the original Ghosts ‘N Goblins is known for its difficulty).

And for tinkerers, adjusting the onscreen buttons is available through the options menu. Just like you remember, taking damage removes armor and will have you in your skivvies.

Even though this build was early, the graphics have the potential to impress, using a blend of 2D and 3D characters and backgrounds. The frame rate isn’t there quite yet, but with optimization and time, we’re hopeful for a smooth and polished experience. Check out the screenshots to the right.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Gold Knights 2 will be out around August.
