PAX Prime 2014: Dungeons and Dragons Revealed by Backflip Studios and Wizards of the Coast

Dungeons and Dragons has been woefully underrepresented on mobile thus far. Underrepresented for a game that exists as a cornerstone to many gamers gaming history, well older gamers anyway. But Backflip Studios is about to fix that. They developing a mobile version that should fit the bill. The game isn’t ready to show off yet, so we can’t really comment on it. But I have trust in Backflip, after all they created one of my favorite games, Army of Darkness Defense on iOS.

PAX 2014: Moonrise — a new Pokemon style game from Undead Labs and Kabam

Moonrise27

Our first PAX 2014 preview is a Pokemon-ish creature collecting and battling RPG to be published by Kabam and under development by Undead Labs. In my time with the game today I was really impressed with the fluid 3D graphics and great animations. It’s got everything you would want in a creature collector, quests, guilds, leveling for special abilities, all that good stuff. (more…)

PAX Prime 2014: Our top picks for the best panels and parties

Screenshot 2014-08-26 20.50.29

PAX is now upon us and with over 70,000 dedicated gamers about to descend upon Seattle, this is going to be one epic holiday weekend.  It took only an hour for the show to sell out back in May, and for good reason.  PAX is a 24/7 bacchanal of gaming, panels, parties, plushies, cosplay, chiptunes, karaoke, streetpassing, and donuts.

The Expo Hall is open daily, Friday, August 29 – Monday, September 1, 10am – 6pm, but there’s so much more to experience beyond the show floor.  Below is just a snapshot of what’s happening, from autograph signings with industry legends to afterhours dating advice (seriously), live 70s game shows and dancing til dawn with Twitch, Wargaming, Squeenix, Destructoid, Harmonix, Bethesda, you name it.

Follow me @contentnow for all the madness, and if you’re at the show, stop by my panel, Tinder Tales and Other Wicked Ways To Get Work as a Game Writer for a chance to win awesome game swag as I interview an all-star panel from Forbes, Game Informer, Polygon, Save/Continue, Deep Silver (Metro Redux, Dead Island 2), and ArenaNet (Guild Wars 2) on how to break into the industry, build your audience, and find work that pays.

What are your top picks for PAX?  Share them in the comments! After the jump you’ll see our picks for the top panels and parties for PAX Prime 2014.

NSFW: New Tropes Vs. Women Video Released

tropesvswomen1

Anita Sarkeesian of Feminist Frequency has released a new video that continues her series to point out tropes against women in video games. This time, the trope is “women as background decoration.” The video illustrates how frequently in games women are used as victims in an offhand way, often in sexualized situations. Due to violence, language, and nudity, the video is NSFW, so maybe wait until you get home to watch it. (more…)

Star Wars: Commander – a Clash of Clones-type set in the Star Wars universe out now

appleappicon_1024x1024

Disney is really starting to pump out the Star Wars games. So far most have been a bit, well, hit or miss. This one I’m still torn on. While it’s great you can play a Clash of Clans type game as either a Rebel or member of the Empire, I’m left with a feeling that there should be more. But, I’m still building my base, will take a few more days to get a real feeling for it. And heck, it’s Star Wars, so, yeah. We’ll see. (more…)
