Under the Radar: May 24, 2013

A crazy number of games hit the App Store every week. It’s too much for most gamers to sort through, so in our Under the Radar feature we try highlight worthy games that might otherwise be overlooked. Here are our picks for this week’s Under The Radar.

Hyper Breaker Turbo

Hyper Breaker Turbo is an impressively spirited brick breaker game. Your job is to use a bumper on the bottom of the screen to keep your brick-breaking ball in play. You’re doing well if you’re breaking bricks higher and higher into the level, until you reach the goal. The game comes with 75 levels, and keeps getting more interesting as you progress, with new kinds of blocks and power-ups being introduced that either help or hinder your progress. Even if you’ve played other brick breakers, Hyper Breaker Turbo is one to check out.

Dash & Bash

Dash & Bash puts you in the webbed feet of a duck named Dash who races through aquatic obstacle courses to beat a beaver named Bash. Using simple touch input, you can coast across the surface of the water, jump up, or dive down to avoid obstacles and pick up collectibles. It’s an auto-runner, but it has enough tweaks and original ideas to feel like its own game. Check it out if you want to put your reflexes to the test.

Bellyfish

Bellyfish is an endless swimming game starring an orange fish. You move through the water automatically, tilting to steer into life-giving oxygen bubbles and out of harm’s way. Harm comes in the form of enemy sea life, like jellyfish and spiny sea urchins. Collect coins, grab boosts and power-ups, and strive for a high score. It doesn’t do much we haven’t seen in other endless runners, but it’s cute and easy to pick up for gamers of all ages.

Jane Wilde

Jane Wilde is a game of excess: It’s filled to the brim with cartoon gore and female eye candy. You play as an absurdly buxom gun-toting fighter facing off against an army of undead enemies, including skeletons, vampires, and bats. It’s a free-to-play game that’s supported by ads and in-app purchases (including nurse and mistress outfits). But if you’re looking for a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up with blood and boobs, look no further.

  1. Jane Wilde is entertaining, even being more than a little over the top… I’ll try to check out the others this weekend. Thanks, Chris.
