Under the Radar: April 28, 2011

Once a week, we take a break from covering the big games from established companies and look for something a bit different. The games in Under the Radar may not have big development dollars behind them, but they’ve usually got a clever gameplay hook or charming sense of humor that makes them worth considering.

Jersey GTL

Price: $.99

If you watch Jersey Shore, then you know that “GTL” stands for the Jersey lifestyle of gym, tan, and laundry. Now there’s a high-score game where you can run these errands while hooking up and getting into fights. Jersey GTL has 8-bit retro graphics and simple gameplay: Just move up and down to avoid bad guys, pick up gold chains, enter stores, and rack up a high score. Hitting the gym makes you temporarily invincible, and keeping your tan healthy and orange keeps you alive. It’s a Jersey thing!

Tactical Warrior

Price: $2.99

In this turn-based strategy game, you take control of one of three sets of warriors in a series of small, tactical battles. There’s no real story and the art is very simple, but there are over 100 puzzle-like battles to play through, and you can build up your characters and earn lots of loot over time. Give this one a try if you like thinking before you swing your sword.

Cooties

Price: Free

Have you had your cootie shot? If so, then you’re ready for this simple action game that’s great for kids. You simply hold down your finger on a petri dish playing field, and keep it moving to avoid getting hit by the fast-moving cootie bugs. You can pick up cash and stars as you try to survive, and your high scores will be uploaded to OpenFeint. Best of all, it’s free until Sunday!

Bumperiffic

Price: $.99

Ever see a vanity license plate that’s too clever by half? Bumperiffic, or BMPRIFC in the game’s secret language, is all about identifying the phrases hidden in license-plate length strings of letters and numbers. For example, a caddy would have the license plate “HLPUGOLF” (help you golf) and a dentist would have “B4DKCME” (before decay see me). The cheesy game show aesthetic makes this word game a LOTTAFUN.

Crazy Waxing

Price: $.99

A few weeks ago we told you about the tattoo parlor game Kitty’s Tattoo, where you had to inflict pain on paying customers with electric needles. Crazy Waxing is similar, but instead of laying down ink, you’re smearing on hot wax, arranging strips of tape, and ripping the hair off in one quick swipe. You’re given a rating based on the amount of hair you remove and how quickly you do it. Just be warned: This game gets you up close and personal with your clients, so it’s not for the squeamish.
